Re: addition to my collection
I have Charles de Gaulle here and while I am not a huge fan of mauve roses , this one does have good colour and flower shape.
I have a rose that is supposed to be Shocking Blue but as I didn't buy it and it had no label on it , I can't be sure.
My hubby bought it for me for Mother's Day after hearing about it on one of the gardening shows on telly. He hot footed off to the Bunnings G.C in Bunbury to find that they had all but sold out but he said the sales lady assured him that the tagless rose was indeed Shocking Blue.
I suppose I should look it up on HMF and compare lol.
cheers. Rosalie
p.s guilty of buying rose bushes on impulse too

Re: addition to my collection
Charles de Gaulle is a good mauve rose, I have grown and propagated it since 1980. The fragrance is great and it's quite healthy for a HT.

Re: addition to my collection
I have Charles De Gualle too, beautiful colour (love mauves) only thing it gets so hot the flowers tend to 'ball' in the heat, and the grasshoppers seem to find it more tasty then the others.
Vol De Nuit is supposed to a good mauve but mine hasn't done much yet, see how that goes.

Re: addition to my collection
My Shocking Blue has been flowering well, it's first season here, gotta say it's not quite what the picture and my mind showed... bit disappointed.. Blueberry Hill on the other hand, is exquisite! Even with all the crazy weather.. I am looking forward to Angel Face and climbing Jessica... love climbers
Re: addition to my collection
I have Vol de Nuit here and while it's a nice green vigorous bush that flowers freely , I don't like the colour. It tends to look very non descript grey most times rather than mauve.
I do have a very pretty mauve one that was supposed to be Lavender Pinocchio [which it is not]. This one holds it's colour consistently regardless of whether it it's in the full sun or the sky is overcast.
I took this pic today around lunchtime. The flowers are past their best but the colour is still good.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I actually looked up my mystery Mother's day rose on HMF last night and it looks like the Bunnings lady was telling the truth all along ; it just might be Shocking Blue after all.
Durrrrr , don't know why I didn't do that in the first place. This time of the year the outer petal edges tend towards cerise but in the cooler weather the mauvey tones show up more.
Interesting thing about this bush though is that it is growing on it's own roots rather than being budded onto an understock. This is a pic of a brave little bud that was facing the heat today.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: addition to my collection
ooooh looks lovely, I love that shade of mauve in the top pic, one lady described Blue Moon as a funeral rose she thought it's a washed out shade of mauve. I might just check out shocking blue. Another nice mauve I have seen is Neptune but haven't tried it

Angel Face has glorious colour but it does like it's TLC if it is to do well.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Largerfeld is another mauve on that I have ; it shows it's best colour during the cooler weather or when it gets afternoon shade otherwise it can bleach out to that dirty grey colour. I have mine growing on the east side of the house for that reason.

Re: addition to my collection
Jordan71, please be more careful when buying roses. Most of the latest fall by the wayside. Do yourself a favour and look at any rose you like on Help Me Find Roses.com before buying. Check everything particularly it's health and members comments if any.
Remember a rose called 'First Prize', the name suggests it's great and the nurseries mentioned fantastic when it was released. Well it's not for me because it suffers Blackspot and Mildew.
Currently I am looking for roses to buy this winter so selected two very big nurseries and have gone through their lists and am up to the P's. So far there are 12 that are likely but I will have little trouble halving them down to 6. That will be 6 in about 400 that pass my test for propagating here.
Great to see your enthusiasm but experience is better and it's all there on Help Me Find Roses.com

Re: addition to my collection
Thanks Roseman, I have checked it out, now just have to track one down, Help me find is great, but sometimes the comments are from zones that aren't much good to me so that is why I come here to ask.
Ozeboy is right about being careful, with limited space I try to do some research first but temptation does creep in on impulse...
