Calloused Cuttings.

I have never used this method before but I thought I'd give it a go. I made up a bundle of cutting when I pruned "Best Friend" wet them and then sealed them in a plastic bag . I have a bit of a fancy to plant a screen of Best Friend and The Children's Rose as the both grow to similar heights [tall] and do very well here in maintaining a nice thick cover of foliage . The colours compliment each other and they both have a lovely strong "rose" perfume.
I might have to wait until next year for TCR cuttings as my prunings from this bush all got thrown of the bonfire heap [someone wanted the wheelbarrow] before I good make my cuttings and wrap them up.

This is the state now of the BF cuttings . Are they ready to pot up or should I wait a little longer ? Do I need to dip them in any rooting gel or similar before potting ?

I potted some up when they were like that. Some rooted, some did nothing.Some eventually died. I still have one with callous and no roots. The cuttings were given to me in January.

Treat them like struck cuttings now because roots will form next and they are very very fragile when they first appear. It's best to allow them to form their roots in the potting mix which should be open and free draining. I mix polystyrene through my mix to open it up. I keep the polystyrene and put it through the chipper to shred it. Margaret has an acquaintaince that uses kitty little. Perlite mixed throunf it works well as does very course sand (bordering on gravel).

Should I pot them up one per pot ?

I don't... but if you have enough mix and pots no reason you shouldn't. I plant them all together for space/mix/pots and makes watering easier for me cos they all get done at once.

P.S... For some unknown reason I am having terrible trouble doing this to the 'Temple Bells' cuttings I have for you. As soon as I can get them to look like this I will send them with your postbag.

I've had good success in the greenhouse this winter striking cuttings in perlite - nothing else. Keep moist/enclosed though, as it's very porous.
