Some new material I will have access to next year, Hulthemia Hybrid (Eyes For You). This is one I cannot wait to work with.

Ok Warren where did you get this wood from. I checked the nurseries that I know of and can't find it, WHO do you know that I don't.

Dave at the moment there is limited supply, I teamed up with an other aussie breeder who is well known, and we have been swapping plant material over the last month. Hoping to combine his species crosses, which are mainly the American types, with my Chinese species crosses, in a few years. So things are hotting up.

Sorry to thread jack for a minute Warren.
Simon, at some earlier post did you say that you were working with Hulthemia species or is it a different Hulthemia scratch

Dave I am working with Euphrates as well, a different one, not so advanced in the breeding as the new one.

If you are using seed, how close to the plant it came off will it be Simon or Warren.

Depends on what they are crossed with Dave, some roses have pretty strong dominate genes. Jim Sproul in the USA has been doing a lot of work with this species hybrid and I would say he has work out what to cross it with. Eventually you would have to back cross it to earlier work to ensure the blotch does'nt weaken or is bred out. There you are.

Jim is the one sending me seed from his seedling going by the code K206. It's yellow with a big red blotch. I'm excited about using this seed to start with because the blotch is so big. His hulthemia seedlings have been tetraploid for some time and the bigger the blotch the more 'blotch genes' are present. This one indicates that all four sets of chromosomes have the blotch gene because the blotch takes up about half the petal. This means all the OP seeds will contain the blotch and, depending what the pollen is, will range from huge blotches in selfs and ones half that size if crossed with something without any botch genes. I'm assuming selfing because K206 was in a greenhouse and so not exposed to wind or insect pollinators.

I've been talking with Steve Beck about 'Eyes for You' as well and he seems fairly happy to help breeders get the hulthemia genes out there. He seems like a really nice genuine guy. He's expecting plants out of quarantine soon and I've put my name on the list for plants or pollen as well. I'd prefer pollen because I don't want to affect his potential sales from it by him releasing it before it is ready and if I get anything worthwhile I will offer it to him out of courtesy too. It is exciting times. It will be good to get these hulthemia seedlings out to as many people as possible who are interested in working with them here in Australia.
