Many thanks. Am really looking forward to these. I can see I will have to go back through all my old posts and messages as I have obviously promised plants and cuttings to various people in return. But I lose track of things so easily these days. Must be age related, although I'm not that old yet. I need a notebook to write it all down... but then would probably forget where I put the notebook. lol!

Ian, PM me your address as I have a plant of 'Comtesse du Cayla' and a plant of 'Slater's Crimson' to send you. Can send 'Cecile Bruner' and 'Climbing Cecile Bruner' cuttings too.

Would anyone have cuttings of Le Vesuve? This is one of my favourite China roses. I grew it many years ago, but after moving house & leaving it behind, I have not been able to find it in nurseries since.

Simon, do you still have 'Comtesse du Cayla'? If you sent me anything back in April I'm afraid to say I never did receive it. Was it one of the China roses that got wiped out by that late frost?

Apologies for not getting back to you both sooner. When I logged back on after my long absence I found my Inbox had been deleted. Not sure how this happened, but it was completely empty.

The China's weren't affected much... just not happy with the growth of them in pots... I was waiting to see if they strengthed up a bit before sending anything out. The only China/Tea/Noisette that really went hard from cuttings was Indica Major. One Comtess du Cayla was put in the ground to see if it was a bit better. It was but only marginally so. I had intended to repot them and see if they picked up a bit as I'm a little concerned they will be failure to thrive babies.

Thanks Simon, Could be a temperature thing as the Chinas and Teas grow like weeds up here. We had one of our coldest winters in decades - almost 100 days with minimums of minus 3 - minus 8 C, but this had no effect on the Chinas. Now that the weather is warming up they are sending out new growth again.
I have a seedling of Camellia China which is a very tardy grower. I guess this might be something to do with poor genetics - a result of selfing hybrid material?
I had some single-flowered Gallica seedlings some years ago that were very interesting, but they proved very difficult to grow on their own roots and were disease magnets. However it is always worth persisting with some seedlings, as they can at times improve as they age.

After writing this I went and checked them. There is one Cometesse du Cayala that is looking good atm... I'm on 2 weeks holidays now so will wrap that one up and send it. Have you got Slater's Crimson? It's looking good at the moment. None of the other Chinas are big enough yet to strike anything from. Thanks to David (mears) I now have 'L' Ouche' as well... well be interesting to see how it goes down here. Magnificent flowers in the photos on HMF. I hope it is fertile some way too.

-8! And they say Tassie is cold! We only got to about -4... cold winter but not record level cold.

Thanks Simon, greatly appreciated. I've got a "type of" Slater's Crimson from SA (not sure how it differs from the original one!). I only got one to strike and it has done poorly, so another one would be great.

I've heard that 'L'Ouche' is not in Australia, but that doesn't mean it is not. lol! At least the Heritage Rose Garden no longer have it listed, so maybe the one they had was a misidentification? That's not to say it isn't still a China rose though.

We've had it as low as minus 13 here. That was quite a few years ago now. We get the really cold mornings after the dry westerlies have past through. But the days often warm up quickly, so it's not the same as having low minimums for most or all of the day.

Ian, you mention the 'Heritage Rose Garden' does not have it listed(L'Ouche), do you mean David Ruston's in SA. Maybe Margret F can fill us in a biot as she works for them I think. The other thing I might do is contact 'Misty' and see if they can shed some light on thier source of the rose

Hi, I'm only going from my memory on this one. Maybe I'm muddled up with something else. At least I do know that L'Ouche is no longer included on Ruston's list, but there is no mention of it being a renaming of a mislabelled rose either. I'll send Margaret an email. She will know. (Commercial sources are likely to tell you anything ).

I have L'Ouche recently budded, too soft to send . Could be OK by winter.

Ian - dunno how desperate you are for Le Vesuve but Green E Roses in Sydney have it listed. They mail potted roses around OZ all year round. Postage would probably cost as much as the pottted rose but their roses are of great quality. Worth a shot if you're willing to part with around $40. Just Google them - they're very helpful

Bruce, I checked with Margaret and she says the L'Ouche at Rustons sends up long arms and looks more like a Bourbon than a China, so they assumed it must be incorrect and moved it into the 19th C foundlings garden. It's currently labelled “Not L’Ouche” as the study name. I read on HelpMeFind that typical L'Ouche is supposed to only grow to around 4 feet. How does all this compare with your rose?

Hi Simon, It will live up to its name then, i.e. "the ouch"!!

Maybe you've got the real L'Ouche?? Margaret did say that she is not sure if we have L'Ouche in Australia. She is only going by what's in Ruston's collection.

Thinking of removing 'Blairi No. 2' from my Want List. I saw it in a nursery recently and it looked dreadful - covered in black spot and powdery mildew. Apparently it has a reputation for being a disease magnet. It looks more Gallica than China in any case.
