Hello from MsMW in Brisbane

Hi everyone
Finally am able to say I'm here to learn more about potted rose growing in Brisbane.
My grandfather and grandmother grew roses beautifully now my 4yo daughter and I are carrying on tradition except we've got out bushes in pots.

what more can I say?.... I'm Addicted to Roses now

And have questions about leaf coloring turning yellow
Will now hunt for answers.

I dare say the speed in which I'm buying new varieties I see, it wont be long before I am running out of space in the garden, and will have to resort to growing in pots myself ....don't you just hate having to budget money and space.....

We have a small starting collection of 17 potted roses...i just popped my head out the door to count them and have found a few more in bloom.
Past month we've just gotten our first ever blooms and it is just soooooo
exciting.

Question i take lots of pics with my iphone and found last night that i can't post directly from my phone to my rose picture album...soo hmmm i'm going to ask a techie friend how i can up load straight from my phone
unless anyone on here knows?

bit more about our small rose collection.

grew up with grandparents growing stunning roses in their front yard.
tried a few times over past 4 years to grow Blue Moons but possums ate them.
My beloved old fluffy died in May this year so brought our first Chicargo Rose as it was what DD y.o picked at bunnings then by 27th May we were in New Farm Park and started smelling all the old roses...Devonisis the gardener was trimming and gave us handfuls of blooms to take home. Filled the house with Love warmth and memories.
Husband left us mid June and so to cheer myself up I went and found Hedgerow Nursery to buy the Devonisis...and brought 7 bushes.
then i found a victorian online site and brought....alot more at ridiculously ('') cheap prices including qld breed brindabella's.
so that's us thus far...i'm trying to learn about why the leaves are yellowing and black spotting and curling. ...heavy rainfall in brisbane this year.

So long as the images are jpegs and are under a certain size you should be able to upload them so long as you can access it properly. The problem may not actually be the iphone, but instead might be the gallery function here... It is a very poor function and I'm actually very tempted to get rid of it altogether. It doesn't make any sense to me. I pay to get more storage space and then they tell me it will expire in a short time... it's crazy. So, the gallery might actually have no storage space left on it because the most recent purchase of space may have expired. Personally I would use the servimg.com account that you get for free by joining here and then upload from there. i am not able to upload from iphone straight to website on iphone...via the gallery function stayed up late last night trying different ways...

anyway i've posted some pics up in my gallery from PC and will now post a few more up...unfortunately iphone3 doesn't take great photo's like a good camera.

Chicargo Peace - Kiya's rose bush (19yo cat passed away in may and Lotus n I got her a rose to rest under) - Huge Hand size bloosom - apricot n pink edging

Papa Maellian - only 1 bloom gorgeous small bud with ruffles as it opened..took my breath away (yes spelt it wrong again)
Devoniensis - my favourite ...though Awakening is close.
Double Delight - nearly died after possum attack just coming back now
Just Joey - possum attack & died
Maria Callas - gorgeous Hot Pink Big blooms
Rubens - died
GRuss an Aachen - gorgeous small star like shape tea like smell unfortunately curling leaf
Awakening - OH now this baby just had first flower 17th November stunning
Jardins de Bagatelle - died
Boule de Neige - breath taking and the scent heavenly along with its shape

oh and another climber (name ?- redwine in colour not many petals) Lotus my 4yo found at bunnings for $4 in throw out pile...i like to rescue plants n animals

Peter Beales lists this rose as a China and one thing I have found to trouble a lot of China roses is mildew. This is also common of a lot of Teas roses. It is a problem when the nigths are cool (and dry) and the days are warm. It seems to be taking forever to warm up this year and mildew is a real issue, at least for me anyway. Lots of things look like they are wearing fur coats. Some roses don't seem affected, whilst some react to a mild infection by curling their leaves. This has been a very typical China rose response for me here in Tas. When the nights warm up mildew will become less of a problem. Mildew also hates to be wet so watering the foliage thoroughly, top and bottom, in the morning (so it has a chance to dry out before nightfall to minimise black spot issues) can also reduce the incidence of mildew.

Which 'Rubens' are you refering to? There are Tea, Hybrid tea, Hybrid Perpetual, and Gallica going by that name. I'm assuming you mean the Tea as it is the only one that seems to be available in Australia.

Here's a link to photo's external....unfortunately the edit button isn't working but will try and name them all. couple of pics of the yellowing in the leaves and the curling though i think the darlings soil is too moist with all the extra rain in brisbane this year...i'll have to move all the pots to a sunnier area.

The curling is mildew for sure. In the this photo:

Is there any webbing and small (tiny) insects crawling around on the underside of the leaves? It looks like spider mite damage. A good soaking with water every day all over, top and bottom, will solve both problems.

yes lots of rain at night here so they little darlings will be getting their leaves wet...as for the Rubens...oh i don't know what kind it was as it died awhile back however i dare say Tea.
thank you for that information.

Am enjoying reading what everyone has to say since I'm a spring chicken in growing tending to roses....i'm panicing a bit with how their leaves look..my mother button going off

Found webbing and black insects under lots of the leaves...sorry not clear pic

i followed the instructions on tutorial and followed them yet no pic so not sure what i did wrong

That's spider mite alright. Set the sprinkler on underneath the leaves for a while and repeat until they get the message they aren't welcome. Do it in the morning so the plant can dry out before nightfall. The water needs to get up underneath the leaves.

Those Spider mites are a bit early, Santa brings them here in December.

What's a Sprinkler?????.....



....Joke....seriously haven't been able to use a sprinkler in 10years I'll set a mist system up though.
Thank you Simon for pointing that spider mite out cause Ive been spraying Under leaves for black spot yet never noticed these critters.

I took some pics this am of 2 more big blooms this am then by 2pm the chicargo peace had shriveled up.
I'm guessing now better rose the roses to have morning sun then afternoon sun here in Brisbane.
I'll post these up ..... Wasn't even that hot today
