I don't have the beetles (touch wood) but that aphid mess certainly looks familiar. My fingers are permanently green from squishing.

Re: WHAT IS BUGGING MY ROSES !!!
Meryl, I had to spray for aphids as there were a lot of grafts shooting though I don't spray the mature roses, just hose the Aphids off.
Those sex maniac bugs have been here each season but have not seen any distruction caused by them. If they grow much bigger you should be able to put a saddle on one and ride him up to the mail box.

The sex maniac bugs [ lol, I thought all bugs were sex maniacs judging by how they breed] look like what we call assassin bugs to me .
And their copius copulation is a direct result of the largesse offered on your rose buds.
[or to put it another way , they're rootin 'cause your aphis are tootin Thee. ]
cheers. Rosalie

Re: WHAT IS BUGGING MY ROSES !!!
Bemo, you will have to migrate to Oz, looks like you have taken a fancy to those beautiful little Aphids. The benefits are numerous, they come in all colours and give birth to instant sap sucking babies. They produce Honeydew and will cull the worthless poor roses from the very healthy ones.
To keep your Aphids happy and well nourished you will have to supply countless quantities of new rose shoots and remove their preditors. Preditors are as follows Humans that plant HT roses that need constant spraying, Ladybirds, Preditor wasps and those pesky ants that climg up to eat them and cahnge the flavour of your Honeydew crop.
Count yourself lucky if you have a few for there are a lot of nurseries selling HT roses that are health hazards to walk through for nothing lives there.
seem to pump out almost instant babies non stop

Re: WHAT IS BUGGING MY ROSES !!!
My best friends in the rose gardens are the little birds . Since they all moved in I seldom see an aphid . I have bought home roses from different nurseries that have had them thick on the buds ; just put the pots out overnight near one of the birdbaths and hey presto ! aphis all gone by morning.
Now those rose eating beetles that's another story ......

I have a funny feeling that aphis are one of those strange creatures that can breed with out a male ; so called virgin births where the eggs don't have to be fertilised and in turn hatch into more female aphis .

Ozrose, we will have to change the name of this topic to ' Comedy Topic.'
These live bearing insects just keep pumping them out, how they fertilise I don't know. Could be self fertilisation for I never see them acting like the beetles.
Haven't heard from Bemo, he's either not coming or can't tolerate anymore of this.

Re: WHAT IS BUGGING MY ROSES !!!
aphids can reproduce asexually by a process called parthenogenisis (all females) and also sexually the way of the beetle... just to try and mkae things at least a little bit credible here
Re: WHAT IS BUGGING MY ROSES !!!
last year i had a few aphids but not like bemo's thank god, was going to spray but saw a few lady birds so i put it off, with in a week all aphids were gone thanx to the lady birds, if i had sprayed , i would ve lost a valueable preditor, so think about putting the spray aside unless , it really gets out of controll, i not against spraying

Bruce, you are the only one who has recognized the beauty of this creature. But you forgot to mention that the true prettiness will appear, still when the aphids were gone.
The wonderfull sooty mold will appear to make the gardener happy.

David,
I noticed this also (the 1st time) on my roses. Maybe it's caused by the rose midge (Dasineura rhodophaga)
have nice holydays

See this photo of yours Cheryl... those little golden things are aphid mummies. If you don't spray any rogor around they will all hatch out little wasps that prey on the aphids. It has been shown that every wasp can take out about 200 aphid in its 4 week life. In 4 weeks 1 wasp becomes 200. In 8 weeks those 200 become 40,000. Those aphid don't stand a chance In time you will have such a healthy population of wasps that the aphid problem will cease to be one. On the other hand, by spraying you also kill them and you will be in an eternal tug-of-war with the bugs. If you could turn a blind eye in the short term you and your garden will love you for it in the long term. If you want to see something really cool, pick a few of these mummies off and put them in a jar and watch them hatch tiny wasps out. They are THE coolest things EVER!

We don't have the little birds but we have little green frogs that seem to love Aphids.
This time of year we have a lot of fat little green frogs

Thanks for the advise Simon, I did not spray the beetles, I one say the one pair of them and moved them to another plant in the garden,, BTW that was just one of of nearly 100 effected rose bushes

Re: WHAT IS BUGGING MY ROSES !!!
Bemo, we have a Preditor Wasp here that lays in the Aphid and turns the Aphid into a light fawn sphere about the size of a full grown Aphid.
Looks same as or similar to the one in your pix. You might see the spheres
sticking to the stem where the aphids were.
