Flowers
Has anyone got flowers yet, I haven't as I pruned late, planted late, and just to add insult to injury we have had LOTS of rain which has slowed everything up but the grass and weeds.

Re: Flowers
John, you would "normally" have flowers by now, would you not. I understand you have had some unusual weather, is this what you would put it down to ?
Mine I can understand with the late prune on some of them, but even the unpruned have not shot a flower as yet.

Re: Flowers
My timing for flowers is usually spot on, but this year I don't know if anything will be ready for the 10th October. Yes, I am putting it down to the weather. The coldest winter for 50 odd years and it is still cold......the daylight hours are still cool and raining

Thanks Gary, it will brighten a very dull John and David.
The closest thing to a flower I have are leaves. The 800 Gladi bulbs we planted look further advanced than the roses at present.

Re: Flowers
Yes the older roses grow well in our acidic soil and somewhat tropical climate and don't take a lot of looking after.

Re: Flowers
I'm in Victoria and I also pruned late, finishing in late August. I'm just starting to get a few roses on the HT's now. Gary, you'll be interested to know that the tea roses I banished from my rose beds to the border plantings are powering ahead. It suits them to be able to grow freely and not need pruning.

Re: Flowers
I always love looking at your beautiful garden Gary, not just the roses but all the perennials etc. I really like the feeling of abundant greenery and flowers.
I have lots of buds and just a few flowers opening up on my (mainly) HT's, but with the irises, poppies (californian, flanders), osteospermums, azaleas and some natives doing their thing, I am pleased with the way the garden is looking. I try to have something in flower all the time. Only disappointment is I lost my brown boronias with all the rain we've had. 3 years healthy I suppose I shouldn't complain really.

I love your garden Balinbear.
There are quite few god ideas to pick up especially the wooden logs you used to support the climbers.

Also easier to run supporting wires between the wooden posts as well, Alya.....

Re: Flowers
That is true. This is exactly what I intend to do.
You've read my mind Neptune!!! Thank you.
l think it will also be possible to run the wires diagonally too to make some sort of barrier for foxes and cats during the night and help the birds stay alive. You see.. the birds have been nesting very close to the ground in our garden and I have no idea why. I thought this would be against the birds survival instinct. But here we go! It is very upsetting to see the birds half eaten dead at the bottom of the plant just under its nest. This happens all the time when I woke up to the screams of the animals during the night. I have been contemplating covering all around the gardens with 2m high trellis fencing and re-plant the climbers against them just to make it safe for the birds but the strings are much more sensible in terms of cost and I am hoping this will do the trick.
Will it do the trick?

Re: Flowers
I just looked at my photos. What a difference a couple of months of no rain make.
Our place is "Outback Australia Brown" at present. We have lost a few plants and a couple of young roses.
We usually have reliable rainfall and the sandy nature of our soil (probably because of the rainfall) does generally does not cause an issue.

Same here, Gary. Any small amounts of rain here have been quickly evaporated off by the hot, dry and windy conditions.

We have had the driest October-November for a long time. Normally we get some rain from thunderstorms (even though we are in a bit of a storm shadow) but this year instead of coming from the south west they have been coming from the north west and missing us completely.
We got a shower last night but not enough to settle the dust.

Re: Flowers
Hi everyone. We hope your all (?) had a good Christmas Day. Santa gave us a great present. We had 30mm of rain. Probably more than we have had all put together since June.
Our ground is still awfully dry. Our bore cuts out after 10 minutes and our dam is getting down to critical level. We have lost a lot of the newer roses due to the heat and lack of water. Surprisingly some of the larger ones are growing great guns (but not flowering).
David we ended up with 5 roses from the ones we rustled on our trip. We had about 50 callus up (using the burrito method) but the heat has been so persistent that not many could survive. Just need to wait until they flower to see if we can identify them.
Anyway hope you are all well.
Gary

Re: Flowers
To Lee and yourself Gary, the best belated Christmas wishes.
Do you think the 30mL will help ?. So all the storms that went Brisbane way missed you I guess. Since you were here we have had no decent rain, a few mls here and there. At present I would hate to see a fire anywhere. The growth from the Spring rains has left a lot of fuel.
On another note, the lovely present of 'Molesworth Yellow' decided to turn it's toes up recently.
Any thoughts of what the 'rustled' roses might be ?
We are well thanks, you know the drill to much food.
David.

Re: Flowers
Something is not quite right with the weather system of the planet Earth these days. Here in the UK it is the middle of winter and we still have not got rain. I dig the soil and it is bone dry...just a tad bit of moisture at the very top of the soil from the frost thawing..
