Watering Pots
I was wanting to know how other members water their roses in pots.
Every time you water them, in the warmer months, do you water until it flows out the bottom of the pot? Do you do this daily? What are the other way do you water pots in the warmer months? Cheers

Re: Watering Pots
hi Paul,
I water the pots everyday in the warmer months , usually at night that way the moisture stays in , I find if u do it during the day they dry up rather quick , I fill the pot right to the top until the water almost flows over but not quite.
also I recommend to put some mulch , I use sugar cane .

Re: Watering Pots
I water mine almost everyday in the late afternoon or early evening in the hotter weather, till they flow. I met a very nice rosarian ( who won quite a few awards for his care in the church rose garden over the years) gave me the advice to put peat moss to retain moisture in the pots rather then suger cane, he said it works better and you would have to put a lot of suger cane mulch in to get the same effect. The other tip he mentioned was to get Searles Cow manure, as it is finely sifted, not clumped and use that. As he said the rose will jump out and hug you for it.

Re: Watering Pots
Hi Paul...in the Rose society we had a lady named BJ who had 276 pots......she would get up every morning before work and water her pots. She would count to ten then move to the next pot, till she had finished. She also had many award winning roses in her collection

Re: Watering Pots
I water mine in the mornings (I have enough trouble with BS as it is....) In hot weather (30C+) I will water them in the evenings as well. I try not to let them overflow at the top. If they've dried out too much I'll soak the pot in a tub (this only works for smaller black pots!). Signs of being dried out - the water runs out of the bottom straight away. A saucer can then be useful.

Re: Watering Pots
276 pots! Now that's what I call dedication. Maybe she only repotted a few at a time. At 10 a year, that would take 27 years!!
I wonder how many Dan has right now?

Re: Watering Pots
345 roses! Wow that is amazing! Sounds wonderful. Yes, when we win lotto....... a big garden to fit all the roses and everything else I want to grow. I love reading Susan Irvine's books, it's almost as good as growing them yourself because she writes so well. I think that's the closest I'll get!

Re: Watering Pots
thanks for that Jordan, most of mine are in pots around 50cm, some are in smaller ones, however I'm in the proccess of changing them to bigger pots. The good thing for me is, i found a pot importer here in Perth, who imports pots in sets, if one gets broken they can't sell them as sets. So the put the other ones out as seconds, there is nothing wrong with them, they are perfect. For a 50cm glazed pot I pay betweenjordan71 wrote:most my pots are in 40cm to bigger paul
$15-$20, depending on who serves you lol. The very same pots are in garden centres for around $100. I was in Dawsons today and noticed they get there pots from where I get them, I noticed a huge glazed pot about 60-70 cm selling for $145, the very same pot i pay $35. BARGAIN hey.
Re: Watering Pots
Well done Paul on that find of a "pot" distributor. That is a good saving compared to retail prices.
Dan, do you use black plastic or which colour ?
