Maree there is a disease out there which causes roses to die back from the tips, it gets progressively worse as the season and years go on. I have had a few from one particular nursery ( not going to mention the name) where to has happened. It also spread very easily, as you can guess they were dug out during the first sign of this disease.

Is the disease spread through the soil or is it airborne, Ozroz?

@silkyfizz: Silky, I think you would liek FC a lot. In fact, I don't recall ever hearing a really bad word against this rose. Once people acquire FC, they usually never want to be without one, even though new roses in future years become new favourites.

I gave a pair to a friend of a friend for a house warming present a few years ago. When I moved house myself a year later, and left all my roses behind, I came into the season too late to order a new FC, so I offered to exchange two flash new potted $30 roses in exchange for one of the old FCs. Nuthin' doin' Sad (not all bad news - the guy did send over a bottle of passable chanpagne)

@roseyteesh: Teesh, one of the few places you can get JdB these days is Magic Gardens in Vic. MG has sold me some damnfine roses in the past, including two great and super healthy JdBs, so I recommend that source. I think she is one of the fairest of all my roses, elegant but neither icing-bag prissy nor overly pointy. Smells far better to me than JPII, too.(although JPII is an extraordinarily good-looking bush, to be sure)

I wanted to know what everyone's favourite rose is and why. Name, type, colour and scent etc etc.

Thought it might make an interesting topic (I am sure it has been said before but I haven't been here long Smile)

Mine have to be :

Abracadabra for colour - Terrible plant and always reverts though

Blackberry Nip for scent and colour

Double Delight for size, colour, healthiness and scent

Augusta Luise for shape, colour and scent

Black Velvet for colour and shape - No scent though Sad

If anyone can recommend any of theirs I would love to hear about them Smile

Well for me Rosyteesh that'll be

Double Delight = consistant in colour, high level of scent, for me a good vasse flower.

Pope John Paul = nice large bloom and a fantasticly fragrant.

Holtermans gold = nicely shaped bloom, good yellow and good vasse life.

Ariana = consistant blooms, lovely colour and it's the name of my special little 4 year old grandaughter, which is the reason we bought this rose in the first place.

Hi Paul - Holtermans gold Looks divine! I may have to add it to my list. We have only 2 yellows - Candlelight (we suspect it is anyway) and Fresia. I have been on the lookout for another yellow Smile

Hi rosyteesh, you won't be disapointed with a Holtermans, for me its overtaken the Fresia and Gold Bunny that I have.

I am thinking it might be added to my list as well, it is hard to find a good pure yellow that doesn't tend towards apriocot

I am trying Elina, a light yellow. It will be a while before it gets going I think, so can't say how good yet...
My favorite changes day to day, but today it's City of Newcastle. Lovely red with a light fragrance.

Yes, my Elina looks like it might take a bit of time too. Looks healthy enough but quite spindly at the moment. Mind you, the fact that the possums ate first shoots didn't help. The suggestion of pepper worked a treat though so now it's a waiting game. Come on and grow!!!

With respect to Elina once it takes off it will grow like a tree. I have five which I prune heavily every year and they get up to 8 feet tall and 5 feet wide and they have an abundance of flowers. I noticed yesterday that one of my Elina's has eight water shoots. If all roses grew like Elina growing roses would be so much more enjoyable.

Thanks Ausrose. Wow, 8 ft tall, I didn't allow quite that much room for it. Where are you? Maybe here in Melbourne it will be a tad smaller? Looking forward to it taking off though, can't wait to see the blooms.

silkyfizz I live in Emu Plains on the western outskirts of Sydney along the banks of the Nepean River just before the commencement of the Blue Mountains.
Elina isn't the biggest rose I grow. I have bushes of Spirit of Peace and Korliam which are bigger bushes than my Elinas. On the other side of the coin I have French Lace bushes that have never grown beyond 40 cm.

The only problem is my block is quarter acre and I have run out of room. No snakes to date however we have resident rainbow lorikeets and a visiting flock of sulphur crested cockatoos.

Ausrose, great picture, those loris look so tame. Last week after days of bad winds and rough weather, I found a tame lori exhausted in the backyard. Got online to find reports of a lost bird but no luck. After a week of lots of tucker and rest, he found a buddy lori (wild) and has joined them. It took him a couple of days to discover nectar-rich trees around here so I know he'll be fine. He hasn't bothered with the dry food and fruit so he should do OK. It was a good reminder of the importance of including bird-friendly plants in our gardens, as well as our beloved roses.

Well said Silky , thats what i'm doing , trying to feed the birds by nature , not by hand , am trying to establish a garden that the birds , bees and bugs and i all enjoy , but after years and years of growing roses and perennialls , natives are a bit challenging , but we'll get there .
