What about Ross Roses in SA? They promote Australian bred roses.

Re: Autumn Flowers
Warren, since breeding a few seedlings over the past five or so years I can see it's an enjoyable hobby. Pity we can't change it into a hobby that pays all it's expenses. Most Australian breeders are in the same predicement.
How do we change that I'm going to try and find out by just asking simp
le fact finding questions like:- Why don't you have a stand of Australian bred roses when there are customers wanting to buy Australian? What do the Australian growers/breeders have to do to get their roses in a prime location in your nursery? Or enter a nursery and ask to be shown all the Australian roses they have in stock now everyone is thinking Australian.
That should get a few answers. I wouldn't mention any association, club, just represent myself as an interested person.
Perhaps there is need for hot dry climate roses as David mentions however the greater population lives near the ocean. People just love living near water. An honest label that tells the truth would be a welcome change.
I really believe Aussie roses can be sold, perhaps a co-op where breeders pay an annual subsidy to pay for marketing and merchandising material. Probably the Rose Hybridisers Assoc of Aust would be prepared to run siuch a scheme.
Sally I have numerous Aussie Roses listed on HMF under Glenorie Roses but have had very little response. Ross Roses no doubt list roses but I'm trying to come up with a scheme to get results. No more run arounds or relying on nurseries to grow and promote your roses. No more going to see them with cap in hand feeling like they are not interested.
Warren my heart goes out to you for all your work, I'll make the inquiries and see if all the rose societies can push Australian. Let's ask the exhibition rose people to put on more classes for Aussies to enlighten the public.

Re: Autumn Flowers
Should anyone have any bright ideas what can be done then please let me know.
Perhaps some Rosettes for Aussie bred roses donated by the Rose Hybridisers or Rosetalk would get our roses in the public domain.
Imagine these rosettes on display at the Sydney Royal, something like Best Australian Rose pre 2000 and another bred after 2000.
Thousands of people would see these roses and some would go to a rose nursery to buy them. This would make the nurseries realise there is a demand for these roses. We would have to make roses available to the exhibitors wishing to grow and exhibit them.
I'm willing to propagate any roses requested by exhibitors. There are others that bud so we could share the load. I have had a couple of exhibitors visiting to learn my winter budding techniques so they should be able to grow their own.

Re: Autumn Flowers
I think that's a very good idea Bruce.
If our local show wasn't so small ..... hmmm, you know, I may just put a class in there for "Australian bred rose" anyway as the local garden club is reasonably keen and were supplied for many years by Golden Vale.
Gotta start somewhere, right?

Re: Autumn Flowers
I have noticed classes for Australian bred roses, one winner was
Pink Angel which was bred by Mrs Parkes. It's a very large pink single.
This is about lifting the profile of Aussies.
I think the prizes for Aussies should be very worthwhile to attract exhibitors, not just any old card or single ribbon but rosettes or cups any exhibitor would like to have on display in the family home. Something to boast about or win with pride.
Does anyone else have a bright idea before the wheels start turning.
