Re: Anybody identify this?
David. Have decided to leave Fimbriata where she stands until it matures - don.t want to dig up an immature plant this late. Similarly because it has been dug so late I have put Mrs RH in a pot where I can give her a bit of TLC rather pop her in the garden and hope she survives. May swap them next winter should they - or I - survive that long.

Re: Anybody identify this?
It was considered a compliment to a man in the 19th C (and early 20th, eg Mrs Albert Nash), to name a rose after his wife. Not her fault she married Reynolds Hole, who doesn't have an apostrophe.
By the way it wasn't released as a Tea, and isn't one - the Tealadies are acknowledging that. I think it was a mistake to have put it in the Tea Book at all, when there were plenty of other roses that could have used the space. What is it? Dunno. Bourbon or HP. Waves long arms, smells too good to be Tea.

Yep couldn't agree more. Whatever Mrs RH is she isn't a Tea. Although both parents are listed as Teas, one Andre Scwartz is a son of General Jacqueminot one of the first Hybrid Perpetuals. Have grown her before and know she throws long canes all over the place which is why I wanted to put her over an arch.
Her flowers are lovely though and smell heavenly
Much the same could be said of another of my faves Mrs BR Cant whcih although classified as a Tea throws long canes everywhere.
IMO Mrs RH should be classed as a Hybrid Perpetual - her growth pattern puts me in mind of another HP Reine de Violette and most HP's Ive grown have been long lanky buggers.
Whatever her ancestry and classification though I still love her and that's all she wrote as far as growing roses is concerned

Re: Anybody identify this?
Larry, Mrs BR Cant you recomended to me back a few years is fantastic.
2 meters high and about 4 meters wide and just covered in blooms. It is still one of my favourites and when I heard Gary (Billandbear) had a climber I budded a few from that plant. They look good at present, activated first week of August, are now about a meter tall and look very much like a healthy climber.

Re: Anybody identify this?
Not wanting to sound like a kill joy here, but as Margaret pointed out, this is a classical example of what can result from incorrect grammar and punctuation. The name of this rose is not referring to anyone’s cavity, but to someone’s proper name. I feel slightly embarassed for her and am sure that in that time, the name would not have raised an eyebrow
Larry I wish I can find some examples of your hilarious responses to (our friends across the pond's) posts regarding (their) rose rooting practices. I recall it took them so long to cotton on.

Re: Anybody identify this?
Larry, I bought 'Fimbriata' last winter and Carole has just seen it in flower and likes , But in saying that, not keen on some old roses, mostly singles and once flowering. She the ruffled edges of it. Regards David.

I'm not so sure Rita. Even in Shakespeare's time such a name would have been met with fits of laughter from the peanut gallery. Although I agree that the "cultured" gentry would have always retained their stiff upper lip and were probably largely oblivious to any connotations, (and been shocked to think there could be any such connotations ). Meanwhile the "unwashed" masses would have received the name with great hilarity.
Imagine for instance going into a pub frequented by merchant sailors of the time and proclaiming in a loud voice "I have just smelt Mrs Reynolds Hole and it was delightful".
So I still maintain that this was a very unfortunate name.
