Two to identify please
Hi,
I've been going around the garden putting nice labels on all the roses. I have a rose map of the garden, but these are the ones marked on the map.

The first two photos are the same rose. It's a very large strong plant with wicked thorns.

Re: Two to identify please
The top photo looks a lot like Joy of Life... but then the other photos cast doubt on that...
Re: Two to identify please
Hi,
I looked up Joy Of Life on HMF and that's definitely NOT it. Mine is a darker richer red with a whitish reverse.
The rose in the third photo has quite a smallish flower compared to the first one.

Re: Two to identify please
Sorry, Barbara B, I can’t help with the IDs or your beautiful roses either, but have to ask about the nice labels. What a great idea. What do they look like and where did you get them?

Re: Two to identify please
Hi Neptune,
I think you could be right about Brigadoon. I checked with HMF and it looks about right.
Roseman, I'll check out the scent later and let you know.
Jac2, I bought recycled plastic tree stakes from the B store. 28mmX28mm square and 1800 long. Tony ripped them in half lengthwise, cut them into 30cm lengths and put a point on them. I wrote on them with a Sharpie Oil Paint pen from the Tools section at the B store.
I got the tip from another forum.

Re: Two to identify please
If it has a strong "pong" and is an older rose in your collection it might be "Granada"

My 'Brigadoon' doesn't have any yellow in it at all.

Re: Two to identify please
OK, I guess that wipes out Brigadoon.
What do you think of Chicago Peace? I don't know the rose - could that be it?

Re: Two to identify please
Hi Roseman,
I've probably had the rose in the first two pictures ten years or so. I may have bought it from Swanes SA, or Treloars. I bought a few from them back then.
The last one is more recent - from someone who had Treloars roses but has gone out of business now. It wasn't labelled. I bought it because it looked very clean and healthy.

Re: Two to identify please
Look at that: the labels are beautiful and you have a Julia’s Rose with lots of new growth! I’ve been thinking of ways to make nice labels.
I was just at the B store today, where I bought a birdbath. Shoot … now I’ve got to go back tomorrow. Oh no, they’ve got potted roses there at the moment … a very high risk situation …. mmmmmmm
Thanks for the photo, Barbara B, I have copied your directions ☺

Re: Two to identify please
I'm wondering if that second rose might not be 'Joyfulness' ?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Some of the photos on HMF are darker in colour but that could be the season (or a mislabel sometimes).
Or, maybe, 'Chicago Peace'.
The first one reminds me of 'Victoriana' but I think there are a handful of roses with a "silver reverse" to the petals.

Re: Two to identify please
I thought that to Wendy, if it is strong on pong it can't be 'Joyfulness'. Chcago Peace might go close.

Re: Two to identify please
The bottom/3rd picture looks like Tuscan Sun. It is a floribunda but its first flush in spring is usually single flowers.
Cheers,
Louise.
