What's the current thinking about letting newly planted bare-root roses flower in their first year in the ground/pot?
I've been inclined to nip the flower buds out to try and encourage vegetative / root growth. Does it really make much difference though? scratch

People will say so... on the other hand I'm a pretty firm believer in the plants knowing what their limits are and if they decide to flower they will havethe resources to do so.

You would have to beat some of ours with a stick to stop them flowering. We usually let them go for it. Sometimes we might take a flower off a reasonably small cutting but I figure it will encourage them to send out a better root system if they are forced to by flowering.

I agree with the others . As for ground or pots. I like ours to go in the ground if I have them in pots I loose them probably as I forget them. Hmmmm
