Rose Hips Empty Rose Hips

Post by orchid40 28th October 2009, 09:56

I've had a query from someone who wants to know which roses make the best or most hips. Since I deadhead mine I've got no idea! Could someone please help me on this topic? It won't be for breeding, maybe for rose hip syrup.

Rosa rugosa 'alba' is traditionally used for rose hip jam (and wine 'Merry' ) because it sets lots of large fleshy hips. You need to plant two unrelated rugosa together though because they have self-pollination barriers... so a Rosa rugosa and a Rosa rugosa 'alba' planted together would be ideal.
