Fragrant Rose Empty Fragrant Rose

Post by heartofhush 21st July 2009, 16:03

Hi
Can some one suggest a good fragrant rose that i can grow please.
Easy one would be a good start as I am not really a rose person, except for the one that was here at my home when i moved here.
My mum use to grow roses and for some reason i have this feeling i need to grow these or at least try.
I was also thinking of growing some in pots.
If anyone can give me some ideas i would be most appreciated.
thank you
Lu

Fragrant Rose Empty Fragrant Rose

Post by heartofhush 22nd July 2009, 08:37

Hello Carole
Thank you so very much for replying back to me.
I dont really know what colour I like as all colours are pretty.
I just know my mum had roses ,she use to grow them and for some reason I have to grow them too now.
But what you mentioned is a good idea about in a vase and they will last.
I know I want a rose that smells really pretty.
I guess if I saw a picture of one it may grab me if you know what I mean.
But any rose will be fine, Its a start anyway to what I am meant to do.
Thank you for your help.

Heartofflush, there are thousands of roses out there but few are healthy in your area. I presume you want a Hybrid Tea which is the rose most new gardeners expect a rose to look and smell like.

Would suggest " Lady Sylvia", nice clear pink with plenty of fragrance.
" Firefighter", medium red, tall and frangrance to die for.
" Charles DeGaulle", "Big Purple" and "Blue Moon", all purples come mauves with fragrance.
All these are cutting roses and have very good vase life specially with an Aspro Clear added to the vase water.

If you would like to give an old rose a try would suggest Tea roses in your climate. Try "Mrs. B R Cant", which has become one of my favourites though there are dozens of really nice Tea roses.

Best of luck, roses are like a disease, once started there is no stopping.

IHi Heartohflush,
for fragrance and repeat flowering I would say a David Austin. Ozeboy  has thrown his David Austin out though because of black spot caused with the humidity in Sydney. Did you say Sceptre' d Isle grew good Ozeboy ? This rose looks very pretty with other cottage flowers and is fragrant.
How about Zephrine Drouhin, its a fragrant pink climber. How does it grow in Sydney, Ozeboy  ?

Hello everyone,
Thank you for your welcomed suggestions.
I will keep my eye open for the roses you have mentioned.
Maybe eBay will have them or even Oztion
Seems like roses named David is the one i need to remember.
I have no idea what a hybrid is but i am sure i will learn.
I do like climbers as well, I have a 4 arch walkway to my front door now so i can add a nice smelling rose to that.
Thank you for helping me.

Hi Rosemeadow, really good to see you posting again. To all the members out there that have not met you, Karen is a very nice girl and has a heart of gold.

I haven't grown any of the two DA's you mentioned but have had a friend growing Sceptered Isle on the east coast and speaks well of it's disease resistence. Lu there may be other DA's that are healthy but I am yet to find one. Pity, because they have such beautiful blooms. The better roses for health seem to come from Chinese ancestors. I don't use pestercides or fungus sprays as science has proven they do great harm to your immune system.

Lu, I can sell you a Zephrine Drouhin on its own roots for $5. plus postage, if you want. Its only a baby, but will be so easy to plant and if you look after it by keeping it watered, mulched and protected from anyone walking on it, it will grow into a very good climber. Other good climbers for you could be Lamarque and Blossomtime which I have as young own roots as well. Have a look on Helpmefindroses to see these roses. This last Autumn Blossomtime at my friends garden was so very beautiful, a pale pink. Lamarque is white.

Bruce, it is you with the heart of gold, my youngest daughter's wardrobe is the proof of this !!!!!
Thankyou though for you kind words and your welcome back.

Hi Rosemeadow
Yes please would you, I have been looking online and I cant find it.
I did as you suggested and I looked up the other 2 plants.

Lamarque
White, yellow undertones, darker center. Moderate, lemon, tea fragrance. Average diameter 4.
This sounds and looks really pretty and the fragrance would be nice as well.

Blossomtime

Pink. Strong fragrance. 38 to 65 petals. Average diameter 3.5

Please forgive me for being so dumb, but what does 38 to 65 petals.mean, does it mean per rose flower,if so how do they fit so many petals on one little flower, heavens to betsy.

And yes I will buy all 3 of them please.
I think I would rather buy them from someone who is really growing them and I can take pics of the growing process, if you like.

Please let me know your details so that I can deposit the money into your account.

Thank youuuu so very much for helping me.
Take Care
Lu

Fragrant Rose Empty Re: Fragrant Rose

Post by Admin 24th July 2009, 19:12

Lu... I can totally recommend getting plants from Karen. I have received material from her in the past and it has been wonderfully healthy. If you get a 'Lamarque' off Karen make sure it has lots of room... it's a big one and it has a most delicious fragrance. Without a doubt one of the most beautiful roses ever. Even down here in the cold it thrives. In case you didn't know what Karen was talking about when she mentioned 'own-root' roses, these are the ones that are not grafted but are cutting grown instead. These have MANY advantages over grafted roses. For instance... I have just sent TheE a struck cutting of 'Lamarque' too because the grafted one she had was grafted onto a tall standard and it was snapped off in a storm. It would never grow back as 'Lamarque' because it was grafted. The cutting grown one, however, could recover from an injury such as this and always re-shoot as 'Lamarque'. If you have the room, try a related rose called 'Crepuscule' too. It's a lovely soft apricot colour. For fragrance 'The Children's Rose' is hard to go past too and it has, for me, been one of the more healthy roses.

On another note Karen... you know I was talking about that unknown rose I found down here that I was propagating... I think I have about three plants of it... are you still keen to try one to help me ID it?

Just go through your list carefully Karen and find the ones that are protected by a PBR. It's illegal to sell these ones unless you are the holder of the PBR. You can find out more about these ones here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

We have a classifieds forum now just for this reason. It is important to search that PBR database and if you can't find a variety then you should try its official registered name. For example 'Mary Rose' is offically registered as 'AUSmary'. You can find these names on HMF. Enter the official registered name into the PBR database to search for it. For example 'Sharifa Asma', also known as 'AUSreef', has a current Australian PBR: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Thanks Simon. I looked in The Hedgerow catalogue and it had that Sharifa Asma was bred in 1989 and I have just rechecked the year and realised that I missed the PBR that was typed there. Thats pretty close though to 20 years though, unless it was realeased after that date.I left Sophy's Rose off my list because it was still under patent.
The date catalogues give, is that the date it was realesed or the year it germinated ? I find that plantbreeders site you listed pretty hard to follow. I will be more careful next time, I thought I was being careful.

Karen, I suggest it's better to use the more precise variety name on your search. If you use 'Ausreef' instead of 'Sharifa Asma ' you should find the item.

It's true that plants patents last, in general, 20 years, however, U.S. patents do not offer full protection in Australia so companies will often take out multiple patents in each country their product is to be released. So, AUSreef was released by DA in 1989, however, it didn't make it to Australia until 1994 and the Australian PBR was issued 02-Jun-1997. This means its Australian 'patent' won't expire until 2017. So to be sure you should always visit that PBR database link above and search for the variety. I will put a seperate post in the hybridising section regarding plant PBR/trademarks/registered names/introductions etc as it relates to roses to go into this in more detail and assist anyone else who is wishing to breed and introduce their own roses.

Thankyou very much for that pbr database link Simon. It will come in handy. I always feel a bit guilty if I give plants to people and im not sure if that are protected or not, and just having a quick look you cant always rely on the label as they may be out of date.
