'City of Benalla'
'City of Benalla' is an Australian-bred rose by George Dawson.
I got my bush as a scraggy "freebie". It's been in the ground a couple of years now and this first spring flush is quite grand. So glad I could save it.
And also glad I could enter it in the local ag show (after twisting the arm of the Hort steward to add an "Australian-bred Rose" class!!
Got a first with the 'City of Benalla' and a 2nd with 'Flemington' (Chapman).
Must say that the Flemington was put in way too early really for a good show rose. But after a hot weekend it's actually still okay (looks perfect to show *now* actually!)

Re: 'City of Benalla'
This was the best for ages. We had SO MANY roses and flowers this year. The Lazy Rosarian wrote:Well done Wendy, were there many entries ?
And managed to get up to 4 entries in the Australian-bred (2 were mine but gotta start somewhere! There was only 1 last year!)
People asked me how I had so many roses ready to go in....
My secret....
I didn't prune them this year....

Re: 'City of Benalla'
I don't know. :/ I got mine as a "toss out" from a nursery that was selling up. The plant wasn't in the best condition due to being in the pot for a while and remnant stock and all.dannyboy wrote: Well done great pics to.Does anybody know who sells or stocks City of Benalla ????.
I might try take some cuttings next year.
Still waiting for David to come down to Victoria and teach me how to graft...

Just glad to have put something into the class - and that they held up to the weather well which helped showcase them even more.paulh wrote:cool bananas you must feel proud autumn

This is a pic I took yesterday morning of blooms still on the bush of 'City of Benalla'. The pic shows a brighter pink than it is really.

Re: 'City of Benalla'
Well done Wendy! Your roses look lovely.
I haven't seen City of Benalla in the flesh but I was quite taken by the colour especially of Flemington when I saw it at a rose show last year. Love that dusky pink shade, quite unusual. It's such a pity more Aussie bred roses aren't carried by most nurseries. Not around here anyway.

Re: 'City of Benalla'
A little hard to compare the two really - one I've pulled back from a near-death experience and the other is only a baby still.
I think Flemington will have the better blooms (well, for show anyway) due to less split centres but City of Benalla has bigger blooms. I suspect Flemington also has a faster repeat.
Will know more in 12mths

Re: 'City of Benalla'
Fleming Racecourse the name we in the rose society prefer to call it has been one of the most successful floribundas on the show bench for a number of years having won a number of grand champions ribbons in numerous prestigious rose shows.
Wendy as you are interested in showing the AQ has produced a e-booklet on exhibiting that is very informative. If you would like a copy email me your address on Facebook (Doug Hayne-Australian Bred Roses) and I'll email you a copy.

Re: 'City of Benalla'
I will send it as soon as I get out of bed. These days I get the Daily Telegraph sent to my iPad so I lay in bed and read it. Is that the height of decadence or not.
You may not have the competition you expect as I believe it is getting harder to get cut roses into WA. If the darkside exhibitors can get roses into WA you are going to have your hands full as the standard over here these days is unbelievable. Glynis and I are struggling of late and only picking up the crumbs where a few years back we were more than competitive.
