Yes David they are the same. Last year from memory, was a much warmer start to summer, this year it was a cooler start to summer, however once the heat started it really hasn't stopped. Some of the roses you would expect to be a wash with fragrance, Neptune, Pope John, Blue Moon, Angel Face, Double Delight, Gift of Grace, Parole and Friesia to name a few.

Paul, looking outside the box for awhile, you mentioned that you had fires around you. Did you have smoke at your house from them?, I wonder if that has shut down or retarded the part of the flower which has the fragrance within.

Yes David on two occasions we had days on end where we had smoke, not a thick smoke though. I must say the non event with scent has been here right back from spring onwards. I thought maybe after a couple of flushes things might get better, but no go.

I suggest it may be the heat. I know ours have better perfume on cooler days than hotter days.

We have finally had a few days with sub 30 degree temps and you can smell the perfume just walking around whereas on the hot days it is absent.

However this articles says warm humid weather is best so that puts play to my argument

Also have a read of this. It does not answer your question as such but has some info on the perfume of roses.

Thanks for the links Balinbear, trying Dr Google to get some ideas, but there seems to be nothing definite.

"Warm, humid weather"
Umm... they're talking about ENGLAND. So "warm" is in the low-mid20s. Not "stinking hot" like here. lol

It's the oils in the petals that carry the scent. If those oils evaporate off very fast due to hot weather then there isn't much scent left... Which is why they pick the damask buds for rose oil distillation at 4-5am... Smile

You're not wrong about English "warm", Autumn!!! They put their bathers on when it reaches 19/20 degs.!!! Sweating
As for the rose scents, I'm so glad someone else has had this problem - I thought it was me! Just Joey is not a patch on it's usual scent at the moment. I'll just blame the weather! Fragrance 294053457

I notice that at different times of the day the perfume of our roses is stronger than at other times, and that varies with different types of roses!

Me too! I think it's something to do with the temperature, but not sure! The experts here will enlighten us, I hope!
