Some progress shots of new rose beds
Well it's raining in earnest in Melbourne now, and I'm back at work next week, so it's unlikely that I'll completely finish my new rose beds. I thought I'd post some progress shots of what I've done so far.
Marking out the beds with spray paint pinched from DHs stash.

Trenching the edges.

Some trees I chopped down to make light and room, and because I didn't like them anyway.

Removing sod and digging over the main curved bed, before digging through organic matter. Not a great shot, sorry.

One of my dogs trying to get out of helping me dig. Whoops, it's sideways.

Today. Small front beds finished, with some perennials in there, getting a head start. Still digging through some organic stuff in the big back bed, before covering with cardboard and mulch.

Well done good work going on there, soil looks nice and rich
Re: Some progress shots of new rose beds
Zoe, we will leave this thread here for these reasons, you are pleasure to have on the forum, you are a Rosaholic in the making, young, female and they are allowed to make some mistakes, all you have to do is ask one, men on the other hand are not allowed to, just ask a woman, here ends my reasoning.

Zoe I have just re=read your original post and found this bit,
Marking out the beds with spray paint pinched from DHs stash.
I do ASSUME that "DH" is shortened from "Darling Husband"

Re: Some progress shots of new rose beds
Haha yes, DH for 'dear husband'. Pinching things from your husband is allowed! No so much for unsuspecting strangers who happen to have the initials 'D.H'.... Hahahahah.
David, I'm not sure what you thought I meant about moving my post... I accidentally put it in the "What's Bugging My Roses" forum! How embarrassing. Imagine if all my hard work ends up 'bugging' my roses! I would not be a happy camper. Anyway, someone has moved this into the 'Rose DIY' forum, which is much less embarrassing for me and where I should have posted in the first place, instead of making a mess of this site and posting in all the wrong areas, hahahaha. Thanks

Zoe, well done on all that hard work. Those curved beds along the drive look fantastic. Lucky roses.

Your new rose beds look wonderful Zoe! You seem to have a lovely home in the bush. I'm very jealous! I can hardly wait to see it after all the roses are in.

Yes, it is love Gary! I'm sitting by the fire with a heat pack on my back after a wonderful day digging. Loved every minute of it, even if it hurts!

Re: Some progress shots of new rose beds
I spend most of the weekend building stairs and starting a retaining wall for an area which are getting levelled out. I know the feeling of a tired back and I agree that despite the pain it is a great feeling to know that you have achieved something for the day.Debbie G wrote:Yes, it is love Gary! Re: Some progress shots of new rose beds
My Treloar's order arrived today:

My freebie rose was DA Windermere, which I'm pretty chuffed about! I was scared they'd send me an Iceberg or something.

Re: Some progress shots of new rose beds
Zoe we have had those clams for our ducks in the past, They are very versatile. Could you tell us what the roses are that you purchased. My other Q is what is the brown liquid ?

Re: Some progress shots of new rose beds
Roseman the brown liquid would be the leftover material that was around the roots for shipping which is now floating on the surface of the water. If you look closely the water isn't brown other than on the surface Roseman. Look at the top of photo. I have had similar results when I first got my roses from Treloars.
Cheers

Re: Some progress shots of new rose beds
I got the clam for our dogs in summer, but they won't go in it. I've tried but it's a bit small for me, haha.
The brown liquid is just rain water I collected in the clam for the past week, there are some leaves in the bottom so it looks brown, and the sawdust that was all around the roots of the roses floated to the top. Looks pretty funky, but it's just water with some junk in it!
The roses I got from Treloars are Abe Darby, Heritage, Munstead Wood, Charles Rene Macintosh, SDLM, Zeffy Drouhin, Rosarie de l'Hay, Sarah van Fleet, Lorraine Lee and Buff Beauty. And Windermere as a freebie!
This is my first bare root order, can you imagine how excited I am??? It's like Christmas when I was 7 years old.
