Canberra Horticultural Centenary Show

The African Queen and I judged the Canberra Horticultural Centenary Rose Show. The grand champion was a unit of City of Goulburn other ribbon winners were Moonstone (exhibition) and White Angel (miniature).

The number of exhibitors were down on previous years due to the unseasonal weather we have experienced recently however the blooms were of a high standard. A disappointing aspect of the show was the lack of Australian bred roses with a unit of the miniature Delicious (Welsh) being on its lonesome. The standout unit of the show was three full blooms of Magma although not figuring in the champion ribbons due to technical faults the unit stood out like a sore thumb another unit that stood out and didn't figure in the awards was one of the floribunda Sir Cliff Richard.

A Standard Unit of roses is one that contains blooms of the same cultivar. It is a unit eligible for a Championship Award, Champion Ribbon or any other Champion or Championship Award given. It is strictly in NSW and at present there are 15 Standard Units.
They are as follows:
1. A vase of One Exhibition Rose
2. A vase of Bunch Roses, 3 stems, same cultivar
3. A vase of Bunch Roses, 5 stems, same cultivar
4. A vase of Modern Decorative Roses, 3 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar
5. A vase of Modern Decorative Roses, 4-6 stems and/or cuts, same
cultivar, minimum of 10 blooms
6. A vase of Floribunda Roses, 1-6 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar,
minimum of 10 blooms
7. A vase of Floribunda Roses, up to 25 blooms, unlimited stems and/or
cuts, same cultivar
8. A vase of Full Bloom Roses, 3 stems, same cultivar
9. A vase of Bud to Full Bloom Roses, 4 stages, same cultivar
10. A vase of Miniflora Roses, 1-6 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar,
minimum of 10 blooms
11. A vase of Miniature Roses, 3 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar
12. A vase of Miniature Roses, 4-6 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar,
minimum of 10 blooms
13. A vase of Miniature Bunch Roses, 5 stems, same cultivar
14. A vase of Miniature Roses, Bud to Full Bloom, 4 stages, same cultivar
15. A vase of Shrub Roses, 1-6 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar
Magma - No 8 and Sir Cliff Richard - No 7
To explain a little more David in a show there can be a class which is made up of 9 exhibition blooms in the one vase as there was in Canberra over the weekend. As this is not a standard unit it couldn't win a champion ribbon for exhibition blooms or be considered for grand champion.
Both the Magma and Sir Cliff Richard units were considered for ribbons as they are both standard units.
