Show Winners

This thread is in response to a suggestion from betsyw and Happy roses on the thread Novelty roses. White Spray was Grand Champion 2013 NSW Championships Day 3 Sydney Royal Easter Show and Pink Parfait  was the Grand Champion RAS Show Day 2. Both these units are floribunda class 1 to 25 blooms. This class wins more Grand Champion ribbons than any other class.

Oh ausrose! These are beautiful.  I particularly like Joyfulness.  I probably wrong, (a green stick!), but is Joyfulness an older variety of rose?  I think I have memories of my father growing this rose, but, as I said, I'm probably wrong!  SueH.

Splendid, splendid roses. What's the dazzling white one? I looked up "White Spray" on HMF in case it was the actual name of the variety, but I think not.

White Spray is a parent of other roses i think , is that right Ausrose ? Beautiful roses !!

This is the White Spray HMF threw at me :

Shrub.  
White or white blend.  Mild fragrance.  4 to 11 petals.  Average diameter 0.75".  Small, single (4-8 petals), cluster-flowered bloom form

The White Spray in the photo is the LeGrice one.

This giving roses the same name has whiskers on it and leads to confusion as we have experienced.

Oh ausose.  What a lovely photo.  I've just bought a "Duet" rose bush, so was delighted to see it in all its glory! Sueh

Ausrose, how/why did you select White Spray to pursue as a winning white? So many whites to choose from, and you put your time into this one. It (and the arrangement) is drop-dead gorgeous, an unassailable winner,  but not as well known as other white varieties.

SuewH you won't be disappointed.

White Spray is a floribunda and the Grand Champion Unit was 1to25  stems or cuts of a floribunda rose. Another white rose that is eligible for this class is the more recent Fabulous as it is a floribunda.
Roses the like of Tineke, Pope John Paul 11 and Memoire are outstanding white roses but they are Hybrid Teas and have exhibition shape so they are show in the Exhibition Class. The champion of this class sometimes goes onto be Grand Champion.

This Pope John Paul 11 was champion exhibition rose at the Goulburn City Rose Show and was beaten by Duet, written about in previous post, for Grand Champion.

Exhibition Rose is a rose, when half to three-fourths open, which has classic hybrid tea form: a high center with petals symmetrically arranged in an attractive circular outline.

Aha.Florbunda.  Thank you Ausrose. I should have paid more attention to the not=so-fine print on the sash.

Ausrose, if you also grow Chapman's "Mornington", how would you rate the two against one another?

Keep us informed Ausrose,  really great to have your input.

You might even convert some of the members into exhibitors.

'Duet' is one of my favs. The very first rose I grew from a cutting.

betsyw - I bought three of Mornington last year and to date hasn't lived up to expectations  however it is early days. I will have a better idea come October. On the other hand Flemington Race Course has proven to be an outstanding rose over a number of years.

Ozrose - Although I haven't set out to convert any of my fellow posters to exhibiting roses some may find it quite rewarding if they enjoy competition.


SueH - Duet along with Baron Edmund de Rothschild are my two favourite Decorative Class roses.

I have put this photo up previously however I thought it worthwhile to put up in this topic. The rose is named after Bruce's charming wife Joyce.Since 2010 Joyce Abounding has been reclassified to a miniflora.

I am sold on FR. HMF reports a very good fragrance . Like the size and habit, too. Looks to be a good vase companion for Baronne EdR - so glad you love that one too, Ausrose.

I have had Duet for quite a number of years and it has done wonderfully up until the last two years, when it has shown lack of vigour and fewer flowers. Could this be due to old age? (it must be at least 10-15 years old, maybe longer). I thought roses had a much longer lifespan. There are no diseases or other problems I can detect, everything around it is OK. What could be the cause?

Could be due to a number of reasons.I would look at:-

pH of the soil, curl grub, borer, glyphosate poisoning.
