Looking for Nigrette and Dr. Huey

Hi, I'm a rose worshipper who has never before ventured beyond rose books and my own
quarter acre. Like many before me, I have a fascination with the dark, velvety reds
and from what I have read in my rose references and via Google 'Nigrette' and 'Dr. Huey' are two "old school" roses that I would like to try growing in Sydney. I appreciate the difficulties and frustrations that I face with these two, but I would still like to try them.
Anyone out there able to suggest where I might find them ?

Dr Huey is one of the mostly used rootstocks in South Australia.

Thomas for roses stock Nigrette. DR Huey is very hardy and worth growing just for it's blooms. Unfortunatly it is not nearly as dark as a lot of other HT's like Oklahoma.
In Summer it's more of a dark pink
As Ausrose mentions Dr H is used as a rootstock in just about every state except WA. It can sucker badly and I have doubts about it being compatable with a lot of roses grafted on it

Multiflora is the preferred rootstock on the east coast because it is generally better suited to the soils however as many of the roses are grown in South Australia they come to the east coast on Dr Huey. As John would tell you in WA the nearly all roses are on fortuniana rootstock which is better suited to the sandy soils of the west. At the moment I am growing two bushes of fortuniana so I can take cuttings and use them as a rootstock. Where I live and grow roses is on a sandy river flat in outer western Sydney so I'll be interested to see how roses on fortuniana grow in my garden.

Maybe Garry M is looking for these roses not as rootstock but as a plant.

I have a bush of Dr Huey that came from the rootstock overcoming the rose that was budded onto it.

Hi Ozeboy; Thanks got the heads up, but unfortunately Thomas for Roses had never even heard of Nigrette. After reading your comments about Dr. Huey, I think I'll stop searching for it.

Sorry about that, thought they had it. Might be hard to find so would suggest looking for a similar rose.
It's still available in USA described as:-
Small growing HT with small flowers, dark velvet crimson shaded black blooms. Despite it's intense colouring and small stature it is a superb bloomer and a very strong plant.
There are some black red roses here in Aus. I have one available called Black Madonna which is pretty dark. I'll check tomorrow if you are interested. It is $12 plus postage and can throw in a cutting of Dr Huey.

David, I can't seem to find where I saw it before. Sorry Garry but the rose I mentioned above as having was Black Madonna but upon checking it is Black Beauty.
The dark red I would suggest as being very worthwhile to grow is 'Oklahoma' It's got everything and the blooms are a little more open than the tight high centred exhibition blooms. I don't have it for sale but have an exceptional plant (Clone) for buds.

Would you sell me some budwood and perhaps advise me where to go have it grafted onto a rootstock ?
I am a keen rose grower, but lack the experience and skills required for propagating and grafting.

Garry, you are welcome to some budwood however if you can't graft buds then it would be difficult. I have some young plants grafted from my virus free Oklahoma.
