Dr Huey, Fortuniana or Multiflora?

A friend's husband recently tore out (with a tractor, no less) an old Sutter's Gold climber inherited with their house.

Now the rose is fighting back. My friend is charmed to see two baby roses that have sprung up where the shaggy old SG used to be. The new rose(s) was working on two buds, but some critter has already chompled them off.

The house isn't that old, probably dates from the '60s. I would assume that the rose was grafted, and that the rootstock has launched the new growth. Or not?

I'm wondering if anyone would venture a guess as to what the mystery rootstock is, judging by leaves alone. Looks something like Dr H to me, but I'm passing it on to the experts here.

Do we know the background to the house owners in the 60's. Where is the house, these are some of things that might help. Just looking at it IMO I don't think it is the Dr.

The property is located on in the lower Hunter, backing on to the National reserve and beneath the Watagans. The large, plain house was added sometime in the -60s (two modular schoolhouses knocked together .

I knwo nothing about original owners, but In the early 80s, the property was purchased by a Sydney lawyer for weekend use, and a wide wrap-around verandah added (Iwhere the SG is ,loacted against one of teh verandah posts) House was sold in 2002 to my friends.

Looking at the size of it, the Sutter's Gold wouldl have been planted in the 80s-90s, I think. The only rose on the property, one of a handful of ornamental s on the200 acre property,apart from a scattering of palms around the swimming pool and a really bad collection of odd shrubs at the entrance (like a child had planted them). The rose looks like of those well-intentioned stabs at country gardening that never went further. as the lawyer's family's interest in the place dwindled

I know nothing about rootstock Betsy but it looks a bit like the sucker I removed this week from one of my Just Joeys. Third year in a row. Arrrggghhhh. Same wide spacing of leaves looks similar.

Thanks Betsy, I was looking for a time line to see what nurseries could have been around. That will give some indication of rootstock.

Thanks roseman. We can assume the SG was planted when the verandah went up,because it was trained up a verandah post, and I understand that wouldl have been in the'80s. Exactly t whether early or late, couldn't tell you.

There is a new bud forming, and if it doesn't get chomped, then we'll have a flwoer and that shoudl tell us everything.
