Another factor that comes into the equation is the type of rootstock being used. Roses on Dr Huey prefer slightly alkaline soil i.e.just above 7 where as rose on multiflora rootstock prefer slightly acid soil i.e. in the vicinity of 6.5.    

The soil on the east coast of Australia in general terms tends to be acidic while areas such as SA, WA and inland Australia tends to be alkaline.
