Urgent Advice Please

I peoples, I got a call today and got offered 14,  6-7 year old roses for FREE, 4-5 are standards. Half are Ingrid Bergman s, the others well buy the look of the blooms that they had inside the sought of look like Solero, same colour and petal structure.

Anyways, unfortunately there wasn't much care given when they were dug up, there wasn't much soil around the roots with most having no soil. The roots have thick tap roots that have been cut off with a shovel, obviously the root systems were quite extensive so they have been just virtually ripped out.

Well I got home when it was getting dark, just time enough to put them in plastic bags, like I said some just have a short tap root now. What a shame, they obviously were quite robust and healthy specimens.

Are these plants doomed buy the way they have been treated? would they be salvageable, if so what would be the best way to approach this problem?
As some would know, I really don't have any room for them, but heck they were free, so my plan, if viable is to pot them and move them on after winter.

All advice will be gratefully received.

put them in as big a pot you can get for them(not extra large pots....prune the large roots back and try and keep all the fibrous roots. When potting make sure roots are potted heading south)......prune then back........feed them seasol every second day for two weeks and then once a week for a couple of weeks........you will notice within a month or so if they are going to live.......

Thanks Neptune, their are a few that don't have any fibrous roots though, would they be cactus.

no.....just look after them like the rest and then let nature takes its course

John has given you good advice just a couple of extra things that will help are:- Trim the roots so they are clean cut then prune the top part of the rose so it is approximately the same size as the roots. As John has said never let the plant dry out what would be good idea is to soak the bushes in a solution of Seasol until you plant them- no more than a couple of days. Use Seasol as suggested by John but don't fertilise the newly planted bushes however you could add a handful of Seamungus and blood & bone to your planting mix. With respect to the standards only prune above the bud union ie the top part of the standard.
