Good vase life

Hi,
As I am thinking about my list on what to get this year, I am wondering what's out there that has a good vase life that is, lasting at least a week or more rather then a day or two. Any suggestions would be welcome, HT or Florabunda's preferbly.

Firefighter. Holds and holds and holds and holds and holds. Finally when you go to change the (by then) horrid vase water, it drops its perfect petals. And you have pot pourri.

Well happy, for me it has to be Arianna and Honey D'jon they always last far longer than any others that I have, at least a week.

I find that City of Newcastle lasts well if you want a vigorous red rose.

Thanks everyone, I have to say my Firefighter doesn't last long though was thinking about trying Australian red cross, someone said it lasts longer. Anyone have a good apricot?

FF lasts forever for me (most of the time), but there ya go. A friend says that her Camp David is the outstanding long-lasting cutting red of all she grows, including Mr L, Papa M, Red Cross, and FF.

I find Camp David the best and the perfume fills the house.

ok Happy Rose, let see if we can work this from stage one.......

1- when cutting roses from bush have a half a bucket of water with you
2- cut rose and place in water straight away
3- when you are ready, set vase up with luke warm water, one drop of bleach and a few grains of sugar
4-when cutting the rose before putting in vase ...check your length of the cane and then cut the cane underwater in the bucket and place it straight into the vase........

NB: if you want to go to extremes....you can use distill water or water from tap that has been sitting for 6-8 hrs

Neptune, good advice as always, will do that inthe future. I do enjoy having the flowers in the house, and your name has reminded me that Neptune is another that looks lovely. How well does it do?

Everything Neptune said, except I fill the vase with the hottest water possible straight from the tap.

The first time I used this method, I thought the rose stems would parboil for sure. Nope, the hot water method works better than cold or lukewarm for me.

Black Magic, Perfect Moment, Black Velvet, Blackberry Nip, Alecs Red and Candlelight all hold up really well for me :-)

I have never thought of using hot water Betsy, I would have thought it would kill the flower. So I suppose I should experiment now with 3 stems of the same rose, 1 cold - 1 lukewarm and 1 hot.
Now all I have to do is wait to get 3 like stems off the same bush

The "old" memory banks have come into play here a bit. If anyone grows poppies and would like to cut them, you burn the ends and they will hold.

Carole, I read the instructions in disbelief, too. The next part of the advice mentioned putting the vase and flowers in a dark cupbaord overnight! I've tried that, too, and there was no ill effect, but it sounds a bit hoodoo, doesn't it ;-))) I just stick with the hot water now.

About roses and near-boiling water.
I once put a large order of 20 newly arrived bareroots into a bathtub to soak the roots pre-planting. When I went to check the level of the running water, I discovered to my horro that I had turned on the Hot tap, and no Cold. The roses were completely immersed in scalding water.
