Old rose bed syndrome...

Ok, out of left field comes this one, If I want grafted Rugosa's, what is the rootstock that is the closest.
Has anyone used Manetti, we did for our red cut flower roses and it "appeared" to give deeper red tones.

David... my Rugosa are all grafted onto Dr Huey.

Lady Bird Roses grafts rugosa onto multiflora.

David, I don't think the nursery industry knows which is most suitable as they use the same rootstock for every type of rose.
Have a look at some of the species roses the rugosa came from and suggest using that as a rootstock or ownroot. Rootstocks are really only roses that are easy to ownroot, comfortable to work with and as the good book say's, compatable to the sion so the graft won't break down over time.

I dropped into Parramatta Park to see the Rumsey collection and the Rugosa looked like they were covered in small manderins. Just fantastic hips no doubt due to the good rain we have had. Could have filled a sugar bag with hips.

They are supposed to be a cold climate rose though it is unusual how cold roses seem to perform in heat as well. I have Arctic Flame which is one of the Sub Zero series from Brownells. Might make a breeder out of it.

Rugosa roses are ones I use every year... both ways. The rugose texture of the leaves is, unfortunately, lost very quickly but can be brought back out with selected backcrosses (e.g. F1 x F1). I have a tonne of OP rugosa hips forming this year too. You are welcome to a selection from each if you'd like to play with them. They germinate super easy too.

You are welcome to all the OP rugosa seeds you can handle David... there will be thousands. Be prepared for a long wait, however, as they will take 2-3 years before they get their first flowers and they germinate like weeds. Once they start flowering they should become mroe and more remontant as they age. I'll send a selection of OP Scabrosa, Alba, and Ann Endt hips (that will be more than enough for you to handle)... chances are the alba and Ann Endt ones will be selfs but the Scabrosa ones stand a good chance of being crosses as it doesn't self readily.
