Couldn't help it
Don't know what came over me! Must be one of those seniors moments I've heard about. Popped into a local nursery yesterday on my way home, just to get some more mulch...when BAM! there I am in front of the roses. Fragrant Cloud waved her glorious blooms at me and I just melted. But wait...that's not all. Good time methinks to match her up with just the right colour. BAM! Red Intuition - marriage made in heaven. Then another FC and Mr Lincoln joined the party too. With some sages, russell lupins and petunias. Let me tell you my purse was a darn sight lighter on the way home. But oh, the perfume in the car as I drove home was intoxicating. I'm still a bit dazed and have vowed not to drive that way again, because I now know this is beyond my power to control.

I was doing a search on gumtree under roses and came upon this ad...here is a copy..
With over 40 years experience in growing rose bushes grafted on fortuniana root stock, we offer a large selection of potted roses for sale which include hybrid tea, floribunda, miniature, climbing and standard type roses.
Colours available include whites, reds, pinks, mauves, yellows, oranges and multi-coloured varities to name a few.
With prices starting from just $12.00 per plant be sure to buy grower direct and save.
They are at 81 Crystal Brook Rd in Wattle Grove
I've been emailing them about a certain rose which they do have..so I'll take a hike tomorrow for something to do and have a gander...

Carpe Diem, Silky! You Good Thing, You! You haven't given in to temptation, you've seized the day! I wish you incredible joy with your Flagrant Crowd. If I had been shopping alongside you, you would have had footprints on your head from where I climbed over you to get to FC.
Petunias. I have clouds of white trailing ones springing out of a long row of pots as I do every summer. Can't resist 'em, despite their B-List status. Wanted some new UK-bred fragrant double Tumbelinas this year, but at $8.50 per each plant, the maths for 20 became a deal-breaker.

Re: Couldn't help it
Hahaha Betsy, footprints on my head notwithstanding, I would have you in a headlock with one arm and my other wrapped around my pots! They are huge plants, strong with lots of buds and some open flowers. Divine!!!! Likewise Red Intuition which I would normally not even consider but it does look fab with FC. Have just watered and moved the pots into the shade - expected 38 today and already like an oven.
Your petunias sound lovely. Good value as they last and look fresh in the summer. I've got a few still going from last summer! I wanted all white but had to settle for most whites and some red to replace pansies around my gardenia bed. Blue salvias and russell lupins destined for new rose bed. Just want to incorporate B&B, seamungus and compost in there first. Here I was thinking I had months to get it all ramped up.
Carpe Diem is right Betsy! Bit like clothes - when you see a winner, don't hesitate, plough in.lol

Re: Couldn't help it
It's my old veg garden that has been the dogs digging area. It's taken me hours to dig up the suckers (huge) from next doors golden elm. Roundup 2 years running didn't kill it off. The bed should look good when it's established though.

Re: Couldn't help it
Thats real cheap Betsy , cause i only looked a couple of days ago and Soul Mate $45.00 , bit too far to go for a drive though , hate it that Swanes is soo far away !!!! Silky had that problem with next doors creeping vines coming under the fence and into my vegie patch which is on the fence line , they sucked all the moisture out last year , looked into every solution possible , in the end , we dug out the dirt down to the roots that we could see on our side of the fence and poured roundup on it , seems to have worked .. ahh suburbia , don't you just love it ......

Re: Couldn't help it
Well I suppose it could be worse Maree, multistorey block of units casting shade all day. But it is sooo annoying, never ending battle with these blasted suckers. Concentrated roundup just slowed it down. Now it's the mattock and a steely glint in my eye!

Re: Couldn't help it
Silky can you get to the truck of the tree, if possible cut some horizontal lines in the sapwood and pour some R/up in them, it's the sapwood which will take it up. There is an old method people used to have which was copper nails hammered in.

Re: Couldn't help it
Sorry Roseman, getting to the trunk is not an option, don't think the neighbours would take kindly to that. Besides they have a big aggressive dog!
It's going to have to be the mattock and some judicious use of roundup I'm afraid. I don't spray the roundup, I paint it on with a small paint brush. I really hate the stuff but it has its uses.

Re: Couldn't help it
silky...dig a deep hole to take a 40mm pipe.......make sure the whole goes under the fence and towards the trunk of the tree....then make up a batch of roundup...pour down tube and soak the ground round the offending trunk......leave tube there as no-one can see it,......3 days later, pour more roundup in......and repeat in another three days...after that pull pipe out, ...back fill......place leaves over hole area and no-one know where you've been.......then sit back and watch problem go away......
