Rust! Help!

Rust! Help!
With all the discussion of RMV I have been looking more closely at leaves. To my horror I have found some lower leaves on a plant that have some rust. I know this is serious. Even though I don't usually use chemical sprays, I grabbed the Rose Gun and went for it, covering the undersides as much as I could. I'm in a bit of a panic at the moment so would appreciate any advice. What else can I do?
Has anyone had any experience of rust?

Silky, I am not the one to ask as if mine have it they have it, bad luck, mine live rough, but, I would try and find out what causes it and then relate it back to your situ.

Re: Rust! Help!
rust is a fungus and is passed around by wind and water. To keep it to a minimum, make sure you have good air circulation and try to keep the water off the leaves. It will take hold where the water stays on the leaves for over four hours. You could try and spray when the leaves are dry with neem oil, so it gives the leaves a coating. Especially underneath the leaves and that part of the bush that does not dry off quickly

Re: Rust! Help!
rust is a consequence of local conditions. spreads quickly but should be easily controlled if the environment is allowed to dry off. may indicate over fertilising.

Re: Rust! Help!
Thanks guys. I will get some neem oil and try that. Finbarr I wouldn't attribute it to over fertilising as I'm quite sparing in that regard but probably our constant showers and moist conditions have not helped. I will cut back some of the growth from other plants at the back of the bed to improve air circulation and just keep a very careful eye out to detect any further signs. Haven't used neem oil before - does it coat the leaf surface and thereby smother the fungus? How often should I spray with this?

We don't seem to get it on opur roses but some of the Louisana Iris and daylillies we grow seems to suffer from it.

Re: Rust! Help!
apparently there are different rust fungi so maybe some types attack different plants?
