I haven't ever seen anyone recommend just plain perlite (I think you are right about the vermiculite... getting water into the perlite is pretty difficult). Most places seem to recommend perlite + peat. I've got three pots of straight perlite with cuttings in each now tied inside plastic bags. It took a long time to soak the perlite but it seems to be OK... not great but ok. Will see how it goes.
