70% off sale on bare root roses

I have just noticed via facebook that gardenexpress have a 70% off sale on bare root roses which started yestarday .
Personally I have never purchased roses through them so can not comment the quality of stock but thought it worth mentioned if anyone was interested.

Some good bargins there you you are looking for that roses that they stock

Be careful as the discounters here load the price heaps then get you in at 75% didcount which is the realistic normal price.

i have just received an order of raspberries, lily of the valley, shallots, campanula and seed potatoes from this company and was very happy with the quality of the produce.. years ago i think i ordered roses from there too and if i were to do that again i would check that they are at least 2 yr old plants as i think that the ones i received were spindly looking jobs that couldn't hack the frost

There is great variation in older and younger bareroot roses. The younger plants with a lot of feeder roots transplant very well and begin to show shoots very quickly. The older roses with stiff roots and virtually no feeder roots are very slow starters which can take a year before they start to grow well if ever.

I could be wrong(I don't think so) but you will find the roses which you receive with feeder roots on the have been dug previously and healed in, the roses without have been recently dug.

We did discuss this previously . The older plants I purchased last winter
have not thrived like the younger plants. The plants purchased winter two years back have also failed to grow well. All these came with no feeder roots, field grown with large thick roots. Looks like I will have to bud these and replace the older bushes.

In contrast my one to two year old container grown HT's have a ball of feeder roots. The field grown roses up to two years old also have plenty of feeder roots. All these have had a liberal amount of seaweed concentrate from bud activation of the understocks.

I prefer one to two year old field grown plants which will grow feeder roots quickly. After three years they belong in the bin.
