The perfect pillar rose?
May I have some advice please? I have a wrought-iron rose tower about 2.2 m tall (above ground) in a prominent position so what grows on it is very noticeable. Until now, I've had Birthday Present growing there but lovely though BP is (beautiful black-red blooms), it only flowers in spring and is really too big...I'm forever having to get a ladder to lop off strong canes waving a couple of metres above the top.
What would you suggest that will:
• bloom a lot over the length of the season
• not be too big
• have reasonably pliable canes I can twine around the tower
• not be a martyr to black spot
and
• (optional because you can't have everything but wouldn't it be nice) be fragrant.
All suggestions welcomed!

Meryl,
You missed out colour or are you after another red one.

If it meets the other criteria, any colour will do (except bright orange).

Hi Alee. Hi Ozroz. I so agree with you about both those suggestions...so much so that I already have them both. Got any second choice suggestions?

Re: The perfect pillar rose?
Roseman's laughing because I donated a CPM who was surplus to requirements to him and Carole. How is she going, folks? Did she survive?
She was no use for my purposes in Sydney's climate...huge, unbending canes and hardly any flowers.

Re: The perfect pillar rose?
She did indead survive Meryl. She seams to love it here with loads of flowers most of the season.
Do you remember I told you she didn't climb? She does. She didn't climb cause every time she had a flower I put it in a vase. Now she is a very happy climber and I fill my vase from else where.

Buff Beauty would be an option. Beautiful blooms and lots of perfume.

Re: The perfect pillar rose?
I've been hesitant coming back to this thread because it would have been awkward continuing to say to each suggestion "I already have that one". But that's the case. We all have wonderful taste, I think, having the same favourites.
I only lack Rosemeadow's suggestion and would be interested to know which Clark's climbers (apart from the lovely but almost scentless Cicely Lascelles) would go OK on a pillar.
Maybe I have been going about this the wrong way and should, instead, list some roses that seem likely starters which I don't have yet and ask you for your opinion of any you have grown or seen used as pillars.
So, what do you think of:
• Blush Noisette
• Cinderella Clb
• Sympathie
• Royal Gold
• Wild Rover
• Hansa Park
• Claire Austin
• Blossomtime
(and do feel free to suggest others, whether I am likely to have them or not)

Re: The perfect pillar rose?
Our blush noisette very bushy but will get there, excellent flowerer.
Blossomtime bit stiffer but great on a pillar, despite attempts by crimson rosellas to halt its progress.
Best with us however is renae, thornless, pliable, fragrant.can be vigorous but that's what shears are for.

Re: The perfect pillar rose?
Meryl.
I would go for Royal Gold.
There again how close is it to your yellow roses by the pool.
