Delbard Roses

I know this is a bit off my usual topic and somewhat removed from my love of Teas but what experience have people had with Delbard Roses?

Some are great here in Tas... others are dogs! You'll have to be more specific. Which ones are you interested in? My fav. is 'Maurice Utrillo'. It grows well here and spreads out instead of up. The others are not so hot here. I have 'Grand Nord', 'Paul Cezzane', 'Jardins de l'Essonne', 'Altissimo', and 'Carmgnole'.'Altissimo' is great, 'Carmagnole' isn't bad, the others are pretty ordinary for me.

Gary, if you wait a week Val(orchid40) from Victoria is on holiday's, she has good number of them, she will comment on her return.

We have one at home and hte missus really likes it and was asking me about getting some more.

I agree about Maurice Utrillo - I won champion rose at the Toowoomba Show with it a couple of years ago. It is so vibrant, somewhat like the sparks from a blacksmith's forge and every bloom is striped differently.
I have three standards of Grimaldi which I like. Not so keen on Red Intuition as it does not grow easily and as for Camille Pisarro I find it a bit pale. I love the form of Altissimo and have just planted Imperatice Farah.
My friend grows the climber Nahema and it is a better rose than Pierre de Ronsard according to her and others, particularly as it is highly perfumed.

Oh yeah - I have 'Red Intuition' too... it's... forgettable ... I also have 'Nahema ( ) and it is magnificent... I firmly believe every man in the world should buy the lady he loves a 'Nahema'! Its perfume is divine!

The one we have is Papi Dellbard. It grows well and can handle a good pruning. Flowers are nice but I am not sure why she suddenly thought she would like some more..

We are not really into multicolours but I see that there are plenty of single colours that are available.

A bit of info for any Delbard fans out there
First of all ....all the Delbard roses mentioned here are identified by their trademarks.......this is not a problem because it supports the case for genericism of trademarks (ie the plant becomes commonly known by the trademark) .yes I know youre thinking this happens all the time
My main point is that if you wish to propagate these plants you can do so as long as you check to see that the rose has no PBR protection.Also dont use the trademark to be safe.
Find PBR on the IPaustralia website and check for the status of the actual variety eg delstror is the actual variety name for the plant identified above as Grimaldi

No mention was made regarding propagating them. I was just interested to hear how they performed.

Most here are aware of PBR and the ridiculous prices you have to pay for roses that have them. But still the breeders have to make a buck I guess.

most of the Delbards dont have PBR protection but I guess the prices are higher than normal.......If I am wrong please let me know
The point I am trying to make is that many unprotected plants with trademarks are still more expensive than standard roses Many wholesalers who dont understand trademarks believe they cant grow these plants at all

Think we should try and limit discussion in this thread to the growing of them rather than any industry issues affecting them... let's get this back on track a bit

I have quite a lot of Delbards. In general I love them.
Altissimo - not performed well for me
Alfred Sisley - OK but not outstanding
Belle du Seigneur - prolific and pretty
Bordure Nacre - same as above
Camille Pisarro - lovely colour bur leggy
Celine Delbard - absolutely beautiful and healthy too.
Chartreuse de Parme - dead. Succumbed to downey mildew. No very strong anyway.
Dioressence - a lovely perfume and a pretty lavender colour. Good growth.
France Libre - was good last year, still waking up ATM.
Grimaldi - Ok, average performance.
Guy Savoy - Vigorous, tall and attractive.
Grand Nord - a great white, strong and healthy.
Henri Matisse - I love this one. Flowers well and healthy.
Le Rouge et le Noir - Good red, average plant, healthy
Maurice Utrillo - my favourite Delbard - striking blooms, strong growth.
Red Intuition. - Brilliant for 3 years, weakened by disease. Shovel pruning this year.
Soeur Emmanuelle - a pretty lilac pink but balls in wet. Lovely aniseed fragrance.

Val, I have a single seedling from Maurice Utrillo this season... so far it's a strong doer. I was testing to see whether it passes on its stripes. Of all the HT here, this one is probably the healthiest and it spreads instead of growing upright... I was thinking this would make it ideal to put with good strong Teas to try for striped Tea-like shrubs

That sounds very interesting Simon. I don't know many teas, are there striped ones already, or would yours be a first?

Mme Dreout/Driout is kinda stripey. (Climbing Tea). That's why I picked it...

There is... but none, that I am aware, in Australia. 'Homère' is said to have stripes but have never seen a plant of it so can't say. I do have some seed from Kim Rupert in the U.S. from a plant he thinks might be 'Rainbow'. Will be interesting to see if the seed germinates and if it passes on stripes as it's ment to be a sport of 'Papa Gontier' and sports don't often pass on the stripes.

Not sure if Homer, sorry, Homère is actually stripped. More a mix of colour. Ours is about to flower so I will keep an eye on it.

Our Papillon (the one sold in OZ) sometimes has stripes (like the chinas have) but mostly it too is a mix of colours.
