Earning my stripes :)
Got a few stripes appearing hear lately...
This one is a new one for me. Called 'Papageno' it is a 1989 HT bred and released in New Zealand by Sam McCredy. It seems to be quite healthy so far.

'Maurice Utrillo' (2004) is a Delbard that has shown good disease resistance here. I haven't sprayed it and it is clean as a whistle. Also a HT its flowers vary quite a bit in the intensity of the colour in the stripes.

'Red Intuition' (1999) is also a Delbard. I don't know whether it is a strange growing season or not (because 'Kardinal' and a few others of mine are acting the same way), but I am not as impressed with this rose this year as I was last year. It seems to be growing overly long whippy canes this year and whilst I am getting loads of flowers the bush itself looks a little lean.

Soaring Spirits (2004) is a lovely almost single striped repeat flowering climber. I haven't found a spot for this rose yet so it is happy enough flowering away in a pot.

Re: Earning my stripes :)
I really love that Papageno Tas. it is the colour of strawberries and cream. yum.
What is the bush like? is it a good grower? I think I have to get me that rose!
I have a question about Soaring Spirits. I thought is was a once flowerer in practice in that the repeat is sparse and infrequent.. It is a beautiful rose though.

Re: Earning my stripes :)
Maybe its repeat is sparse... it's hard to tell yet because it hasn't produced a lot flowers in the pot... just a constant dribble giving the impression it is repeating... once I find a spot for it in the ground it may well behave like this. HMF says it should have occassional repeat... this is what I am seeing... it is repeating occassionally almost in flushes... it's up to it's third 'flush' now.
RE 'Papageno'... so far it looks good. I'll take a pic today sometime and show you. This is its first year. I bought from Ladybird Roses in Vic bare rooted during winter and it has taken a long time to flower for the first time. Its first flowers, however, are very nicely shaped and coloured. I'm experimenting with budding right now so I'll do you up a graft and see how it goes.

Paul Cezannae (Delbard) also trying to stripe but for some reason only succeeding in places around the edge of the outer petals...

Re: Earning my stripes :)
Gosh your Paul Cezanne is very yellow isn't it ? Maybe it's a temperature influenced type of rose. Mine is very pale, but it's got pink on it.

Golly, Simon, those first 4 striped roses are divine! I honestly thought I didn't like striped roses. LOL. Great name for the last one, Soaring Spirits.

I know you have Red Intuition, Thee, but do you have Soaring Spirits? It's a bit special I think. I like Singles.

Re: Earning my stripes :)
Thought I put up an image to show how much the flower can change over the course of a year. You see how yellow Paul Cezanne is above... this next photo is from the same plant in the Summer:
I like Soaring Spirits too. Mine was left in the pot too long this year and it suffered a set back (because I'm not good with pots ). It's in the ground now and doing much better. On Maurice Utrillo... this is one excellent rose. It's still pretty much got all its leaves and is flowering now when a lot of my roses are losing their leaves and going dormant and it is very healthy. Such a great rose. No two flowers look the same.

Well, I prefer this latest photo of it, Simon, it's so pretty. Soaring Spirits was named to honour the victims of the Twin Towers terrorist attack I see, another reason it's worth buying. You are lucky to have all these roses I want.

Re: Earning my stripes :)
Me too Betty. The variety seems to be very sensitive to temperature though and the flowers now are almost completely yellow again. I don't fully understand it but the flowers produced in the cooler weather seem to have a more frilly scalloped edge, as is evident in the first image, than the ones produced in the warmer weather as in the second image. The temperature here hit -1 last night so it's getting a little cold and the flowers again have that frilly edge. Will see if I can get a pic over the next few days.
Re: Earning my stripes :)
You're a bad influence, Simon, showing me your stripey roses. I went and bought Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley yesterday.

Re: Earning my stripes :)
Stripes! I don't like them, nearly every one seems to be so unhealthy.
When taking a picture would you all take a photo of the bush as well.
There are to many leafless sticks with a bloom on top amoungst striped HT's
Can't beat a real clear pink bloom on a healthy bush to turn my head.
A bloom and fragrance like Lady Sylvia and bush like a Camelia or Tea rose. That's my expectation and anything less gets tossed out, climers excluded.
