First lot of seeds have started germinating...

I try to start checking my seeds for germination after 5-6 weeks because sometimes they start in the fridge. I checked mine last night and three batches of seeds have started germinating in the fridge already, after exactly 6 weeks of germination. These ones are the open pollinated multiflora seeds and one miniature seed. These multiflora seeds will be grown on and the most vigorous one, that is thornless and strikes easily will be selected to grow on as a source for my future, virus-free, rootstocks.



I've sown them into foam broccoli boxes and put them in the mini greenhouse.

I will start checking mine.

I whish you both and the other, which will hopefully follow soon, an excellent germination rate and nice seedlings too.

Almost finished sowing all the seeds today... got 1134 seeds in now... about 100 are already up... got another 300 or so in the fridge that were put in late and will get sown in about 3-5 weeks.

My seedlings got to about 4 leaves in there tubes and have stopped growing

Hope they are out of the -5°C That's enough to slow them down or burn them. My little seedlings (last season's duds) drop all their leaves and most die in winter.

No Simon they are not in the frost and I have been putting them out in the sun when it warms up.

You have alot of seeds in, Simon, and a lot of babies already up. Very exciting for you.
I checked my seeds after them being out of the fridge for a few days, and I have two different ones germinating now. They are seeds from Kathryn Morely and Benjamin Britten and both were pollinated by Fourtune's Double Yellow ( as all my seeds are, I never got around to doing any more. )
I have the Perlite. How do I use it for growing these seeds in, Simon ? Can I use it on its own as the growing medium and how long do I soak it for ? Do I put seed raising mix over the top.? Or should I just grow the seeds in sand ? As I have some open pollinated seedlings that are growing good in sand so far. I am use to my soft creek sand. And just keep the Perlite for trying with special cuttings. Or I could try half of each seeds in the two different meduims to compare.
I will look at your different posts to see where you have posted about planting seedlings before.

I sow the seeds in ordinary potting mix Karen by just laying them on the top of the soil and covering them with about 1cm of perlite (so I can't see the potting mix) and then giving it a light but thorough watering in. I don't wet it before so it spreads easier.

BTW... the DA x fortune's double yellow sounds like an EXCELLENT cross... a non-foetida source of yellow maybe

I will do some with just sand and some with sand and Perlite over the top and see if one or the other does better. I surpose the perlite makes sure your seedlings don't dry out if you miss a watering. Which might have happened to me today, but luckily it hadn't when I went to check them this evening with a torch and give them a drink. That is my open pollinated seeds, I haven't planted my new ones yet. Have been seeing alot of doctors and hospitals over the last three days.

I use the perlite because of discussions I've had with Paul Barden. He said he uses the perlite to cover the seeds because it seems to create a physical barrier to moulds and other such damping off-type fungi. He was saying that since he has started using perlite he has been able to stop spraying for damping off entirely in his germinating greenhouse. So far I have a few observations... if I water with water from my house system the perlite does this job well. If I water with my garden system, which comes directly from a dam that is spring fed it goes brown. The house system passes through a UV steriliser and a two-stage filter system so most micro-organisms are removed. The garden system is unfiltered and I believe the source of the brown colour is a type of brown algae. Whether this affects germination or the seedlings is unknown yet but I have sprayed mancozeb over the perlite and left the door of the greenhouse open to increase circulation... just in case. If I can dry the air out a bit over it maybe the algae won't grow... all I gotta do now is get it to stop raining

My seedlings germinated last September-October are doing well and have been sitting in 4" pots out in the open . They have tolerated some frosty mornings so consider them hardened off for spring growth.
They are nothing special, just seeds taken to trial my germination skills

Have purchased quite a few breeders from Rustons, buds were activated two weeks ago. Also have a few on order due to arrive November.
There's no doubt about it, those people at Rustons are very helpful and a pleasure to do business with.

It's great to see everyone germinating seeds, lets hope for some good results. My emphasis will be on healthy, heat loving, low matainence roses that hopefully will look and smell well. Am going to continue some of Alister Clarks work but try to keep the size down to 1200mm or less

Have noticed some of Alister Clarks roses don't seem to bud well. The Gigantea buds grafted last autumn have only a 50% success rate. Think this trait has been passed onto roses bred from it. They do seem to own root well. Lady Mann has budded well

I've noticed this too Bruce... of the gigantea buds I did last year only one took... and this one has taken me by surprise too... I thought it was also dead and forgot about it and when poking around over the previous weekend noticed the bud had started to shoot... of course this would have to have been AFTER I had bought a mature one from Reliable Roses. I told Jean at Reliable that I had trouble getting the buds to take to which she replied she has never had any trouble... so I was thinking maybe it was just my inexperience... but now that you've said it too Bruce I think there may be more to it given your extensive grafting experience. She did say that they had difficulty budding bracteata and so the plant I received of this species was a cutting grown one (which just quietly I was very happy about).

Thanks for telling me about the perlite. The seeds with perlite over them, I will water with rain water then. One pot with the perlite I will water with creek water, and see what happens.
So the rose seedlings find it easy to push through the perlite ?

My little seedlings are looking better now. Simon has my rain got lost in the post
