Super Star?
I grew this from a cutting. The people who owned the parent bush didn't know anything about roses - or the name.
I've presumed it was Super Star because it tends to vermillion... but I've just looked at some of the pics on HMF and now I'm wondering if I was correct.
Here are a few pics I took in 2009:
(Rose on far left - next to Oklahoma)

A little redder than perhaps in real life but here are some flowers:

Re: Super Star?
It is not Super Star as I remember it. My mum had it growing in the 70's but she ended up pulling them out. It was a lighter more iridescent shade of vermillion . Mostly the buds were a sculpted exhibition shape but every so often it would throw these very full flowers that were almost quartered . It is also an EXTREMELY thorny variety.
What finally got it shovel pruned though was it's dreadful tendency to proliferation . She had several bushes of it and they all showed the same tendency.
What your pics do remind me of is another light bright red rose that was around at the same time [which she also had growing] by the name of Arturo Toscanini.
cheers. Rosalie

Re: Super Star?
Hi,
it's not like my Super Star either. Mine has just turned up its toes and I won't be replacing it. There are nicer ones around.
I find a lot of the brightly coloured roses have nasty thorns - Super Star, Ian Thorpe, Alexander.... We moved Alexander from the outside to the inside of a bed because of the vicious thorns.

Re: Super Star?
I have located a nursery stocking Super Star. Will be able to help with ID this season when I have blooms.

Re: Super Star?
Ohhh... that looks a likely contender! Thanks, Simon.
I'm looking forward to taking more pics later in the year.

Re: Super Star?
HI,
the bloom has the look of a David Austen about it. My Super Star was just the classic hybrid tea form flower.

Re: Super Star?
I think Simon was spot on in ID-ing this one as 'Scarlet Queen Elizabeth'.
Tough bush. Can get a bit of BS and then it shrugs it off and produces more blooms. :p

Re: Super Star?
I found Super Star a bit stingy with flowers, but it has large blooms. Very prickly.

AT the moment dannyboy I am very taken with Marmalade Skies, which seems to be in the vein of Super Star. M Skies has been a very robust rose; drought resistant, BS proof and holds its flowers very well.. here is a photo from today when many other rose flowers in the garden are wilting [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Simon pegged this as 'Scarlet Queen Elizabeth' and I'd agree.

Re: Super Star?
The last rose pictured is not far from 'Super Star'. there are some since that look like the image also. 'Corso', and 'Lady Rose', and another that I have forgotten. The image may be of SS if the bloom has fragrance, and gets more than a fair share of PM. Actually it looks a little to bright, but photos lie. A very good rose in this colour is 'Alexander', offspring of SS, taller grower, magnificent long stems with fragrance.
'Scarlet Queen Elizabeth' if still around, is a poor rose, muted scarlet, no fragrance, only medium sized blooms without character. Roses need fragrance to better distinguish themselves.
