Sir Edward's Rose

Just a head's up that with pruning underway at the Benalla Botanical Gardens I'm heading over there today to try and snaffle some cuttings of "Sir Edward's Rose" ( [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ). It doesn't appear to be available commercially any more and it seems a nice large HT bush etc. At the gardens it's positioned near the memorial to Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop.

I've just spoken to the guy in charge and they will help me out...

I'll try to get quite a few cuttings and will let everyone know how they go in case someone wants a plant/cutting.

Wendy, if you can grab any old fashions as well if you can. If you casn I will pay costs and your time, please thank you, David.

I don't think they have any old-fashioned ones Dave I've only ever seen modern roses. If there are any out the back of the gardens then they have already been pruned.

They gave me an armful of Sir Edward's Rose (if they all strike ... ) And I grabbed some from Elina as we went past (since I learnt about that one today. )
No doubt I'll walk through the gardens in a few month's time and wish I'd got a whole heap of others too!!

I will get some photos later in the year. I was thinking I had one on my phone but it turns out that was of Maria Callis (very similar colour to SER by the way).
The Head Gardener said today that SER was a very healthy plant that had reliable flushes nearly all year. (One of the reasons it had stood out for me). It easily grows 1.5m+
My task - some time tomorrow - will be to sort through the budwood I have. Not sure if some is a little too stout. I was thinking of setting about half of the cuttings up the way you (Simon) described earlier with the damp newspaper, sealed plastic bag, warm place. And the other half in the jar of water. I certainly have a LOT to play with. LOL
I'd better go read the instructions again...

It works a treat Wendy! Go for it the transplanting part is the hardest to harden them off properly.

Managed to grab a few pics with my phone today as I went past - looks like rain over the weekend so I thought I had better get something. The phone camera washed them out a little - they aren't a multi-tone rose really.

Did the cuttings work? My Elina cuttings looked good early one and then just started to fade away.

I'm hoping that I will get several - one is sending out some leaves today. The Elina ones are still ... dunno.
