Golden Vale Nursery? Empty Golden Vale Nursery?

Post by IanM 23rd November 2010, 13:36

Hi, Can anyone tell me if Golden Vale Nursery is still operating? They use to stock an enormous range of roses at one time. But in 2009 they put out a limited list due to the drought. In 2010 they apparently did not produce a list. At least the "History" page on their web site only goes up to 2009. I have tried emailing them but the emails just bounce back. Question

I rang them in winter and they were uncertain about what, if anything, they were going to bud for next year. Trewallyn in Qland were similarly vague. So many of the stand-alone nurseries went under during the drought; so many rarities no longer in commerce.
Someone I know is visiting Benalla soon and will try to check out Golden Vale. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks Margaret. I guess the last thing on everyone's mind during the drought was to purchase roses, when we were all busy just keeping the ones alive that we had already. At least this was the situation for me.

Golden Vale were the only nursery I know of that had the so-called Beale's form of Monsieur Tillier, which was a single-flowered China type. But it never matched up at all well with descriptions of Beale's rose in the literature. I suspect their rose was actually something else. It had a large single red flower, similar to Mutabilis, but fixed in colour. It produced long, arching canes a bit like Spontanea, but was not really a climber. I would like to know if they still have this rose.

Beales MT is more semi-double according to photos in the Tea book.

I seem to recall mine had fairly flat, open flowers, mostly single but occasionally semi-double.

Hi,
Golden Vale is absolutely my nursery of choice for roses. I've had roses from them in the past. Last year I rang them and they said they had real problems from the drought and all the roses I wanted - they couldn't provide. If they ever get going again, I'll definitely stick with them.

Ian, thinking about what you describe; could it have been Altissimo?

Just an update on Golden Vale nursery.
I've just spoken to Philip who told me that they are open at the moment (Mon-Fri, Sat mornings) and they have a few potted roses for sale but they are closing this year.

I'll be going out there some time next week, hopefully, to see what's left in terms of stock.
