Re: hybrid rugosa
I wish mine would start flowering. I have some three years old and still no flowers. I love the leaves and I love rugosa roses to bits and I know they will probably end up remontant.. BUT... they are frustrating to work with when it comes to waiting to see what the flowers are like

My OP 'Frau Dagmar Hastrup' seedlings are the ones that are three years old and still flowerless... great looking seedlings but alas... not a flower to be seen. I love the rugosa foliage more than any other I think. Noisette x rugosa sounds excellent! I've got hips forming on Rugosa 'Alba' from 'Trier' and 'Golden Chersonese' atm... with any luck I'll get some yellow rugosa On another note, I have found that the ones that retain the rugose texture of the leaves tend to be selfs. Nearly all of my modern x rugosa seedlings have followed the same pattern, however, there are exceptions to this on HMF. I did some 'Ann Endt' x 'Wild Rover' pollinations today too... looknig forward to harvest time already
This is one of my three year old Good Frau seedling... awesome foliage:

This is my 'Scabrosa' x 'Gold Coin' seedling's foliage.... two years old and still waiting for it to flower. It's a miniature rugosa hybrid. David Austin did a few rugosa crosses where he inbred the F1 to bring the rugosa foliage back out again while retaining the double flowers.

Re: hybrid rugosa
I don't think triploidy is such a bad thing you know. There is a good chance that triploids will have reduce fertility but this is usually only because of the chromosome count mismatch. There is also a good chance of it making haploid pollen which means it would make an awesome line of diploids and would cross well with other diploids. I also think triploids represent a good compromise between flower/plant size and vigour... half-way between diploids and tetraploids resulting is a better effect in the landscape.

Re: hybrid rugosa
Have you got 'Comtesse de Labarthe' ('Duchesse de Brabant')? I pollinated CdL with 'Scabrosa' last season and every hip took but I was unable to get a single seed to germinate. I'd love for someone else to try this cross to see if anything can come of it. It think it would be excellent. A hybrid rugosa might be just the trick. All my seeds rotted in the bag on me
