Unknown BEAUTIFUL rugosa...
A few years ago now the school I work at dug up their front garden to 'redevelop'. In this garden was an old lovely double purple/red (more red than purple), rugosa rose growing on its own roots. It's suckers had spread throughout the whole bed and it never exceeded 60cm tall. This may have been due to the less than ideal circumstances but I never saw it form a tall shrub anywhere it popped up. I managed to save a sucker of it which I planted here and it has been building up slowly over the last three years but hasn't ever flowered for me... until today
This morning the first flower opened revealing a most beautiful rose with the most amazing, strong, perfume of any rugosa I have grown. When I asked the gardener if the rose was Roseraie de l'Ha˙ he said it didn't ring a bell and he thought not. Mine is still only about 50cm tall and is slow growing. Here are some photos:

I think it still might be Rdl'H but it's short stature has been puzzled. Any ideas?

Re: Unknown BEAUTIFUL rugosa...
The Rdl'H I got from Golden Vale has started flowering and WOW it has big flowers for a wee thing. And even my mother - who has poor sense of smell - thinks it has a strong perfume.
Will photograph it tomorrow unless someone else has some pics of theirs.

Re: Unknown BEAUTIFUL rugosa...
I was thinking it might be 'Ruskin' for a while but 'Ruskin's leaves are not rugose enough and the buds are different shapes and this one is not double enough to be it.
Look forward to seeing some photos

The colour of Rdl'H is very very tricky to photograph. Arrrgggghhh
I don't think it is the same as yours though, Simon. It's more purple than red. (but photographs pink. grrrr)

hmmm..... the search goes on then... time to hit HMF's advanced search option again.
Re: Unknown BEAUTIFUL rugosa...
I think you are right, Wendy. They are probablt different. I've been looking for deep purple/red rugosa hybrids that have spines on the receptacles... no luck yet.
