Rose Pruning Time - Again Empty Rose Pruning Time - Again

Post by The Estate 4th June 2010, 17:21

I have started a little earlier this year than last year as it seems to take a lot longer as each year passes Embarassed I have been saying for year I must cull the crook and poor performers,...

The first one to go was double delight Sad

This one I would like to replace as it is an old favorite and will probably put it into a pot for a few years.

Best Friends is also going to get the chop as it is covered in mildew on the stalk and cant be bothered Twisted Evil
If they need to be spoon fed they are no longer welcome in my garden.

What are you thoughts ??

P.S I am in Vic.

Despite its faults I too will continue to grow 'Double Delight'. When it is behaving...well...WOW! At other times I just pretend it doesn't exist! LOL

Having stated the above, I cannot ignore 'Margaret Merril' any longer & she has to go. I cannot grow this rose well no matter how hard I try & its child 'Make a Wish' (which I have) is so much better IMO anyway.

I am fed up with 'Peace' & its sports too so bye bye! Very Happy

Tip with 'Double Delight'... passed on to me by Dee Smile: Grow it as a standard. It needs to get up off the ground. Only reason I keep my DD around is so that when I have a long enough understock I will bud it high to see how it goes.

'Peace' on the other hand... can 'Peace' off here too Rolling Eyes

Hmmmm great tip Simon & I think that just might be the way to grow it! Thumbsup

Re: 'Peace' it is such a shame I can't keep BS off it because I think it is very beautiful! I grew 'Flaming Peace' for years inland of Bundaberg QLD & it did really well! Oh well so many other beautiful (and healthier) roses can take their place! cheers

Oh & 'Traviata' is going as well! I bought it thinking it was the original version from 1962 but it is the newer one. I have totally neglected this rose for years & yet it is huge & pretty healthy but I can never find pollen on it & never a hip has been seen so it seems pretty useless! I don't like the flowers at all.

It is annoting hey? Despite the (IMO) ugly blooms, I do like the actual plant of 'Traviata'! I should try again but I have so many other easier roses to use now! Meh! LOL...

To all the people pruning and about prune(shovel). Don't take them to the big garden in the sky(tip) I will take them off your hands, they don't call me steptoe for nothing. PM me and we can arrange anything. Damo I am going to Victoria in spring and I could pick up your cast offs or I will pay freight costs if that suits, this applies to all members as well Thumbsup

Hi David! Smile

I will pot up everything that is on the way out & you can drop in & take what you like later in the year (I think there will be quite a few LOL).

Failing that, I could maybe bring them to you. I plan on visiting your area in the near future (have wanted to ever since I found out one of my fave movies 'Spider & Rose' was filmed around Mudgee)!!!

Either way, they are yours if you want them!

Plant those terrible looking HT's around the back of the shed where no one can see them and bring in the blooms for vasing. Surprising how well they look as an arrangement with greenery from other plants are used.

Hi,
I'm looking very carefully at Raubritter. She's crowding out General Gallieni and I prefer the latter.

IMO Cheryl you should know better with the standards as they take longer to grow than bush roses, you won't get a lot of growth because of the food chain.

Well in Europe I've seen everything pruned back to the knuckles. I do sometimes - not every year though. Feed them well in early spring and they should look fabulous.
