Blood and Bone for roses

Have used it this season to feed the roses and have been impressed with the response of the roses.A lot of growth and water shoots and buds etc in very little time.It has the added Potash in the Blood and Bone to which is a bonus.

Hi Danny, how long ago did you apply it and at what rate ?

Hi roseman appplyed it a about a month ago at 100grams per adult plant and half for the younger roses.

Thanks Danny, where was it purchased/brand, as I haven't seen it with Potash before.

Danny, did you use this instead of say Sudden Impact for Roses? I'm assuming so. Also, "the B shop"!! Do you mean Bunnings?! LOL

Yes Sue I used it as my main source for the roses normally I give the them a rose speciality mix from Manutec.

Make sure that the blood and bone you use has Potash added if not buy a of Potash and add it to the Blood and Bone. You only need to apply the granulated stuff once a year. You can buy liquid Potash but you need to apply it more often.

Australian soils are low on Potassium and no matter how much manure of other organic fertilizer you add it will not lift the its level.

When i bought some tomato plants recently (yesterday!), I was told to add potash when the flower buds arrived. Is this right? Ooops.... sorry, off subject! Just wanted to know from the experts!! LOL

Potash seems to leach out of the soil fairly quickly so you need to apply the liquid stuff fairly regularly. On the bottles is says every 2-3 weeks from before flowering until flowering finishes.

We use the granular product and have started putting it on every six months. I was talking to an long time grower and he puts granular stuff on every two months from the end of winter through to mid Autumn. He grows a lot of Austin's and has no problem with blackspot or mildew.

I had a look at the B Shop the other day. Most of the Blood and Bone with added potash still only has minimal amount of potash. Yates Premium NPK of 8:5:1 Richgro 8:1:1 Baileys 6:1:2 (the final figure is the Potassium).

Sudden impact rose fertilizer has a ratio of 9:4:12 which is pretty normal for rose fertilizer so I would suggest that even if you use the potash added product you look at adding some more.

did the long time grower tell you which granulated potash he used.....was it MOP or Sop....?

MOP..muriate of potash
SOP..sulphate of potash

No but I would assume SOP

Yeah one of ours pigged out on a whole bag (only a small bag) one night.

He loved it.

Did your dog grow? Just kidding. I accidently put to much B&B in one of the pots..some of the leaves went a lighter green. I keep hosing it. Should it be ok?

Well he was one of the biggest German Shepherd that I have ever seen. He scared the cr** out of everyone who visited.

Just to add to this topic, I found this about sprays,

I was talking to someone at our garden day about it and he said that the Adelaide Uni (I think that is who he said) did some tests using all the chemicals, milk etc and they found that most effective control of powdery mildew was to hose the plants with water a couple of times a day to wash the spores off.

This is in line with an old rose grower who recommended in a book (not sure which one) that overhead watering in the afternoon was the best method of control which is completely opposite to the normal recommendations so far as watering goes.

I have always said that we don't get as much in Spring if we have decent rain in August which also follows along that line.
