What's happening out there
Not much on Rosetalk lately just wondering if everyone has been as busy as us in the garden.
Lee has a garden club "come and share day" at our place in May so we have been busy, planting plants and cleaning up the place. Easter will be spent giving the roses a bit of a trim and a feed so they can be flowering on the day.
We did plenty of cuttings of salvia and other plants and these have mostly been planted out. Hundreds of them actually. Also salvias grown from seed though the heat over the past couple of months has killed a lot that we planted.
We will do plenty of photos which I will put up for all to see.

Re: What's happening out there
Yes Gary it is very quiet, I think people have just drifted away. I used to be concerned about this when I took over from Simon, but now if people post people post, It is a shame but I guess people move on.
As for your garden make over and tidying up, weren't you have a 'open' garden scheme day or is that next Spring/Summer. Do you grow Gladdys by chance ? or do they grow in your area ? I ask as we have a friend in NZ that does and has some fantastic plants that have come from seed he collects.
As you mention, it is quiet on here, I was thinking the same last weekend and was going to start a thread of what one of my plans for my roses.

Re: What's happening out there
It has been quiet on here but I keep looking at the rose garden and I really have to do something about the weeds and bring the plants back to earth a little bit. After the summer rains everything just took off....maybe this weekend😉

Re: What's happening out there
Yes...it seems like a quiet time of the year......I have gone thru and done a split pruning of my roses (ie: split the bush into thirds and prune one third each week). This allows to compensate for the weather here to try and get a good bloom for the mother's day rose show(Autumn Championship).....then there is feeding the soil....turning it over........setting the lawn up for the cool winter.......and there is my hobby , so more practice on the table.......

Re: What's happening out there
I have been super antisocial for a few months, even online. Now I'm getting back to it, but I don't have any good pics to share because my garden is looking totally feral.
This week I weeded all the running grass out of the rose beds I made last year, and planted a bunch of winter veg seedlings in the ground I rediscovered. It was supposed to rain today but it hasn't so far. Hopefully they'll get a good watering in tomorrow.
I'm beginning to make plans for the work I'll do over winter, and starting to think about what to order at bare-root time.
I'm going to have to move a lot of the roses I planted last year, for a few different reasons. Some are not what they were supposed to be. Some are a different colour than I expected. And some are just too far from the house and not in proper garden beds, so they're struggling for water and getting eaten by weeds.
I have to move Reve d'Or, and I'm NOT looking forward to that! The thing is a monster.

Re: What's happening out there
We "inherited" a Rev d Or that was quite large from a friend. We cut it right back and dug a bit of a hole around it (about 600- 750mm diameter) that cut the main roots and brought it home and it's growing quite happily.
Give your plant a weak seasol drink after you replant it and try to get some own root plants growing from the offcuts.

Yes, I will have to have a go at rooting some cutting this winter. My success rate is about zero so far, but I will try.

Re: What's happening out there
Zoe, try as many different ways with the cuttings that you can find and use the one that works for next time, here is one that works, make sure the paper is "just" damp as Kim mentions,

Re: What's happening out there
We're house painting and renovating a few thingts as we go. We've been working on it since the new year. Huge job but very rewarding. Nothing doing much in the roses. I think I'm buying a few more this winter - I'll give Thomas For Roses a go this year. My vegie gardens have been cleaned up ready for planting so things are on track. We've just been a bit busy.
