Found seedlings. What now?
I'm very excited having found 2 little rose seedlings. They are only about 5cm high and seem to be growing well. Strangely they aren't close to any roses so I have no idea of parentage.
My question is - what do I do now? Do I let them grow a bit bigger, leave them alone or transplant now? Help!

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
If they are getting adequate water where they are I would leave them and transplant them in the winter when they are semi dormant.

I agree with Doug, leave them in-situ till Winter if you can, then transplant, they might even flower for you this year if you are lucky, this will depend on the variety of rose Silky, any chance of a photo of the seedlings please

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
Thank you both for that advice. Waiting til winter and transplanting then is what I thought was best and you have put my mind at ease. They are in quite a dry area so I'm making sure there is enough water for them. Getting flowers this year would be wonderful but I know I have to be patient.
I'll try to get a photo tomorrow. they are only tiny so I'll have to lie down...hope I can get up again though! Lol
Oh, another question: Should I shake the soil off the roots and pop into potting mix or keep whatever rootball there is and put that into potting mix? I'm scared of damaging delicate little roots.

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
Silky, it isn't. Hopefully this one will do better than the last ones. This one is in the drop zone from a 'Lamarque' and a 'Pierre de Ronsard'.... hmmmmm

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
This is right beside the house. And beside the tap. I may have to re-pot though as the tree should have been planted out in winter and is now in a pot that is a bit small. (Not helped by the self-sown borage that is also growing in it!!)
'Lamarque' sets more hips than Pierre so I guess odds are that the seed parent is Lamarque

Here are my tiny seedlings, 2 of them. The closest rose is Graham Thomas.

Is there any way of telling what it could be?

Well I'm sure it's not a sucker, nearest rose is several metres away.

The foliage doesn't look like that of a rootstock sucker.

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
It is amazing where you find them. I found one in a garden ornament that was no where near a rose (a good 20 metres). It was under a tree so I suspect a bird picked up the hip and had it for dinner.

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
My 2 seedlings are now about 30cm high and it will be time to pot them up soon. So exciting! They look healthy and happy. Still in full foliage, no sign of winter dormancy yet.
I need some advice at this point:
Q1. Should I prune them at all or just leave them?
Q2. Should I keep the soil around the rootball when I dig them up and then plonk it into potting mix? Or shake off the soil before potting up?
Q3. Is there anything else I should be doing?
I have watched over them like a mother hen so I don't want to muck it up. Can you tell I'm excited? Lol

In my opinion I would leave them as they are, the only thing I would do is remove a small amount at the tips to promote growth, vegetative and root not flower
Q2. Should I keep the soil around the rootball when I dig them up and then plonk it into potting mix? Or shake off the soil before potting up?
I would take as big a ball from the ground soil that will fit in the pot your are using with a couple of inches either side of the ball and then back fill with good potting mix.
Q3. Is there anything else I should be doing?
If it was me I would soak the entire pot after this has been done in a liquid bath of fertilizer then stand it in the warmest part of your garden, what is the pot made of and colour.

Do they have to be moved ? Any idea of what the rose might be, as in what roses are "near" it. Has it got buds or flowers on it ?

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
Thanks David.
In answer to your question, no they don't really need to be moved at this stage but they are growing close to each other (10cm) so I'm thinking it might be easier to do it while they're still small. Pot probably will be basic black plastic.
Would it be better to wait til next winter do you think?
As to what the rose could be, anyone's guess. Nearest roses are a few metres away - Graham Thomas is closest, in same bed as Elina, Victoria Gold, Gold Bunny, Charles DeGaulle, Barbra Streisand. Also in there is Ebb Tide and Munstead Wood. So it's a bit of a mystery. No flowers or buds yet to give any clues.

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
As they are that close, it might pay to move them, when is the dead/middle of your Winter, this is the time I would do it.
As for what it "might" be, is there any similarity in the leaf/leaves structure ?

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
Oh, looking at the leaves, so logical. Never even occurred to me. Their leaves are very small but I'll have a look.
Zoe, no sign of flowers. The stems are thin and spindly, healthy but not close to bud formation at this stage.

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
Have looked at the leaves of my 2 little seedlings as suggested by David. As far as I can tell, Graham Thomas may be a likely parent as far as colour of leaves go. Frances Dubreuil foliage is a good match as far as leaf shape and size goes, twigginess and thorns.
I supposed I'll just have to wait and see and hope I don't kill them when I pot them up next month.

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
As you are looking seedlings you will have to look at the appropriate leaf stages, juvenile, everything will have to be looked at relative.

Re: Found seedlings. What now?
Ooh a cross between GT and Francis Dubrieul would be something to see, if it happens to be something like that! Imagine if it was a full yellow bloom with the scent of Francis! Now that would be something
