Hot weather and blackspot .....

There are probably two and only two good things about this damnable hot , extremely dry weather , hardly any blackspot compared to last year and hardly any mozzies , plenty of spiders though . Has anyone else noticed they have less BS than other years in Southern Oz ?

On the contrary Maree, I'm finding BS suddenly appearing everywhere. I'm picking off leaves every day. Healthy bushes up until about 10 days ago, and suddenly some plants are looking like sticks.

I find that when the hot weather comes and moisture stays away at night, then the BS stays away....

I do not want to get personal here and I respect your privacy. You do not have to answer this next question, but it will bring the "Black Spot " issue to a local micro climate. Maree, Silky, Dan, What suburbs of Melbourne are you in
As an example Bruce(Ozeboy) lives next door to Swanes, one suburb away at Glenorie. In his micro climate some roses do not do well at all, others fantastic. Go around the corner from him where the climate changes the roses Bruce has trouble with grow dramatically different.
In my climate(Mudgee) I get very little problems related to disease, apart from Clb Peace and Iceberg(which I believe are born with it.)
In vineyards around he and other areas of Oz roses that are disease magnet are planted at the ends of rows to indicate the coming of disease(same as the canary was in coal mines).
Temperature/micro climate/humidity/moisture, are some of the influences which will bring about BS.
On an American forum I am a member of, they have thier micro climates down to street by street nearly.

Despite the rain at the start of the month, it has been very warm and dry since. No blackspot. Last couple of years have been a lot wetter than usual and I saw a lot more. A couple of bushes have had a very slight touch of mildew but that cleared up.
If it rains and I get BS then so be it - I need the rain for the pastures more!!

I'm in Doncaster. My theory is the need for watering, just to keep things alive during our extreme dry spell here. Of course I don't wet the foliage and roses are mulched but maybe the moisture from watering (I try to do mornings) has brought on BS. What to do? Don't water and plants die. Water and pay for it with disease....maybe that's the price that must be paid.

Currently I am in living in the Blackspot Hyatt.

Every rose is affected , excepting only Perfume Passion (I think two leaves have died in 7 months, and that was from old age),Parole and Young Lycidas.

I am not overly fussed. Only one has denuded (yeah, Sweet Intoxication) and everything else has pumped out blooms throughout the season magnificently. They have all worked hard this year, won many compliments, too. Time for all the roses to re-set, or rest, maybe

I am not far from the coast David , usually humid weather here in the summer , roses usually succumb to BS , this year has been hot days and hot nights , got some BS , but definately not as much as previous years ...

Maree, the coast of Melbourne, could be the east, say Portsea, west of the coast, say Chelsea, east of the bay, say Geelong or south along the Great Ocean Road, say Anglesea. As I said I do not want to pry, it is just to get an idea of your climate.

Maree, yes you do have different climate than some others. We have a friend at Lara, again a different climate, thanks Maree.

Which roses are the most frequently used 'canaries', roseman?
