Growing roses from cuttings

hi guys ,
i would like your ideas and imput on how to grow roses from cuttings

i have tried so far to grow few , but unfortunatley they die

I mostly cut 10inch sticks as that is the length I cut rootstock at, but you can do them longer or a bit shorter.
I take off the lower leaves and the top couple I cut back to a third as in chop the leaf.
The bottom I cut at a slant to give it a larger area to make roots.
Then you can dip the end into honey. The left over bit in the end of the jar. Rooting powder or what I am using today is Clonex purple.
I have also dipped the cuttings in honey then the rooting powder.
I have always had mixed results, for me it has always been a bit hit and miss. Having said that if you put in a dozen cuttings and only two make it you then have two free plants.

Out of my last 15, 12 look good, 2 carked it and the kitten ran off with other one. They were done in Clonex.

I'd like to add to what Carole have said. Try to make the slanting cut just below a leaf node to improve the success rate.

last attempt i took a cutting about 8 inches , and used the honey method , kept the tray underneath the pot wet, so the cutting can be moist .. it was out of the sun in a cool place ... it was okay for about a week , but ice noticed its starting to go brown , so i guess i must be doing something wrong

Our success seem to depend on how you hold your mouth when you do the cutting.

One batch you may get 100% success and next time the cutting from the same rose will all die.

I cut a Comtesse de Larbarthe back last year and jabbed a few into the ground and forgot about them. We had a success rate of about 25%. I also tired to do some with the clonex etc and had no success what so ever.

As I said. It depends on how you hold our mouth!!!!

Roses that are destined for cutting get the samen treatment as I would do for rootstock. I think size and wood maturity is very important for sucessfull cuttings. I sort of like them around pencil thickness and comming from growth produced in the spring, if too pithy , they will turn black and rot.

The cuttings should be around 6" long and what I do is, put some hormone gel on the ends(you do not have to do this, but it helps). They are then wrapped in very moist newspaper and then wrapped in plastic which is then place in a shadey cool spot. Have your first look around 2wks for calusing, if no action put them back for another 2wks. Pot up into pots with good potting mix with 50% of the cutting below the surface ( for some reason they do better if planted deep) and keep moist but not to wet. Some rose cultivars take longer than others to calus and produce roots so be patient and don't keep looking.
