Unfortunately Glynis and I won't be going to South Africa for the WFRS Conference this year due to an illness problem I have had in recent years. It is a shame as these conferences are an experience that every serious rosarian should attend. The tours associated with this particular conference are the experience of a lifetime.

Mark Sweeps Neutrog NSW Championships
At the 2012 NSW Royal Agricultural Society Rose Show Mark McGuire swept all before him winning a record twenty of the thirty-four ribbons on offer. In the NSW Championships Mark set a record that won’t be broken in a hurry by winning the four major prizes these being the NSW Rose Championship, NSW Autumn Championship, NSW Miniature Championship and NSW Grand Champion Unit as well as four taking the champion ribbons for four of the remaining six champion ribbons available. One of NSW leading exhibitors for many years Mark’s success was not surprising to fellow rosarians although it was well above his expectations.

With 350 bushes made up 80 different varieties on his suburban block at Billong Ave Neutral Bay Mark’s garden was acclaimed as a Garden of Excellence by North Sydney Council in 2000. As the garden is situated in his front yard and on the footpath (with the permission of the council) it can be viewed by the general public simply by driving up his street.

In recent years Mark’s signature rose has been the magnificent Dr Bruce Chapman miniature Joyce Abounding that has won numerous Miniature Champion ribbons and was the first Australian bred miniature to win a grand champion ribbon at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

When asked about his success on the show bench Mark said, “ Passion, time, control of pests and diseases along with the Neutrog products Sudden Impact and Seamungus are what enables me to consistently put prize winning blooms on the show bench.”

Mark’s activities are not limited to being an exhibitor as he is the Rose Society of NSW Chairman of Judges and a member of the Rose Society of NSW State Counci

Well done to Mark for a fantastic effort.....

I like your idea of only showing four roses in NSW Rose Champs.....we have to come up with 15 roses.......6 x exhibitions,....6 x decorative,...3 x floribunda

Neptune congratulations on yours and Anna's results in the WA Autumn Show. With respect to the championship the results in this thread may give the impression only single blooms are in the NSW Rose Championships when in fact the Rose Championship consists of three exhibition roses in separate vases, a bunch of five stems and a vase of roses chosen from a list of five vases.
Rose Championship entry to consist of:
Three Exhibition Roses, Distinct; One Vase of Bunch Roses, 5 stems, same cultivar; plus any ONE of the following:
1. One Vase of Cluster Flowered Roses, 1 - 6 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar, minimum of 10 blooms.
2. One Vase of Cluster Flowered Roses, up to 25 blooms, same cultivar.
3. One Vase of Decorative Roses, 4 - 6 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar, minimum of 10 blooms.
4. One Vase of Decorative Roses, 3 stems and/or cuts, same cultivar.
5. One Vase of Large Flowered Hybrid Tea Roses, Bud to Full Bloom (4 stages, same cultivar).

John after setting the record for the number of championship ribbons in 2011 which Mark broke this year we only won one ribbon this being the champion Australian bred with the George Dawson Imp.This being the worst we have done in the last 10yrs at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. I feel our fall from dominance related directly to me being bed ridden for just on two months prior to the shows which meant I didn't prepare our roses for the shows. (actually I got out of bed to go to WA) This happens and you have to take the good with the bad.On saying bad it only related results as the three days at the Royal were very enjoyable with social interaction with fellow members and the show itself.
With respect to Mark's garden I do have some photos however they don't do it justice. I will take more photos the next time I visit Mark and post them on the site.

I let my membership lapse here is Vic after many years, and only did 3 shows of actual entering, far to competitive for my liking and also the fact that the main entrants who win all the time , year in year out , also did most of the judging Rolling Eyes

In NSW we have an extremely progressive President and, has through her efforts and example removed most of the over competitiveness in NSW Shows. Also some years back she set up a mentoring program for new exhibitors and as a result this has spread to the regional rose societies and as a result there are many new exhibitors being developed that in the not to distant future will be able to compete with the likes of Mark McGuire etc. These days she runs exhibitors and judges work shops which are quite informative. Not like a number of the other states NSW doesn't have a small number of dominant exhibitors but rather at least seven that can compete at the highest level with anyone of them capable of taking out championship ribbons.

Having done your judges work shop, and one of the people who got you out of your sick bed, I can wholly recommend it to anyone who feels like that they might want to go down that road. And once again, thank you for flying to WA at this time to do the judges work shop. It was well appreciated.

John both the Glynis and I enjoyed the workshop and the hospitality of the members of the WA Rose Society. Glynis requested you thank Anna for her assistance with the show bench. It is hoped those who attended learned as much as we did. I think a point to make is exhibiting and judging go hand in hand and if exhibitors have a basic knowledge of judging they will be better at exhibiting. But before you become a good exhibitor no matter how much knowledge you have on exhibiting and judging you must learn to grow roses that are healthy and clean.

Ausrose, the reason I wanted to meet him was to find out his spray routine. One of the organisers came to see me wanting to know how to bud roses in winter. He mentioned most of my HT's were older than the ones being used for exhibition. I mentioned my HT's need to produce hips for breeding. He mentioned the guys that show roses only want to win and have no interest in breeding. What ever it takes to win is firmly fixed in their minds. I told him chooks that don't lay eggs are of no use and they will die out if no eggs. He replied all they want to do is win at all costs.
Appears it's a persuit for someone else and not me

However he would have a major Blackspot problem close to the harbour
so I can imagine all the spraying that goes on. The commercial cut flower guy up the road from me has probably 3 to 4 acres of Igloos with all HT's and a few white DA's. He carries about $15,000 worth of sprays on hand and is contacted weekly by the expert from the chemical company to advise what to use this week. His roses are perfect, not a blemish.. Theres not too many growers left in this district, probably the cheap imports killing their business. Quite a few have died from cancer like Roy Rumsey who mentioned he would never spray if he had his time over again. Wise but unfortunatly too late as the big C got him. On second thought I don't think I need to see him as I have a fair idea what he is up to.
