Its amazing what a tin of Mr Sheen and a soft rag will do. This rose looses it leaves in the cooler months, but come spring this incredible foliage comes out and stays glossy like this all through summer/autum. A lot of people will not touch it saying it rusts, bought this 5 yrs ago and never had any rust on it. Love both the foliage and blooms on this rose.

After flowering, I prune it down by a 1/2, wait for the regrowth to get about 3ft long , then reduce that by 1/3. This produces lateral growth which will flower in spring. If I didn't do this, it would be huge and uncontrollable.

Any idea where the idea of 'rust' came from Warren

Probably someone who lives on the East Coast.

The idea of rust comes from people in the U.S. It should be remembered that if the disease organism is not there you won't see any symptoms I get rust here on 'Pierre de Ronsard', 'Red Pierre', all my rugosa ('Pink Grootendorst', 'Ann Hall', 'Belle Poitevine', 'Scabrosa', 'Roseraie de l'Haÿ', 'Ann Endt', R. rugosa 'alba', OP 'Frau Dagmar Hastrup', and all my other rugosa seedlings... haven't seen it in 'Rugelda' yet but these also don't have many leaves yet either), and on my Raspberries...

Warren, our plant(plants) of Vanguard is thriving, Noel from Misty, did not like one of the rootstocks, so he chucked another one in, will post picture later today, when I weed around them.
Simon, as yoou say it is the Americans that say it gets 'rust', to the best of your knowledge do some/any of the original .rugosas' get it(rust) or is because of the breeding

Some people say that rust occurs on some species hybrids (rugosa's) because the foliage stays on the plant for a longer period of time compared with pure species which defoliate during Autumn. I have this Cherry plum which rusts really bad just before leaf fall in late Autumn.

Warren, can I assume it is humidity related. I have a rugosa(no name yet) in some weeds and it 'seems' not to get it.
