More scented foliage for Val :)

Thought I'd show you another one that is as old as the dinosaurs... a species rose we all take for granted; Rosa multiflora. There are lots of different forms of this rose that vary according to their locality etc. My one is a particularly beautiful variety with almost rugosa-type leaves. It has the sweet smell of fruit and has glands on the new growth and flower stalks that are similar to that of moss roses and when you run your hand through the thornless branches it releases a smell that is fresh and strong that reminds me of pine needles. I don't know WHICH variety of multiflora it is except that it is a multiflora of some description. I'm still trying to track down it's true identity.

It has recently finished flowering and I have given it a summer haircut. All the prunings were put in as cuttings for budding onto in the coming weaks.

In the extreme close-up you can actually see the oil coming out of the glands along the leaf stem. This is a wonderful no-spray rose that I am going to keep trimmed to a largish shrub, however, could just as easily be trained as a medium sized climber to go up over an arbour.

The glands with oil extruding are amazing. It's a pretty little rose too.
I have to admit I'm very ignorant about all the "Old" roses, I've never seen them for sale at nurseries or online rose traders. Maybe that's because I wasn't looking for them!
Can you suggest a website where they are available please ?

Nurseries... in the links section Val there are a list of online nurseries that sell old garden roses... Some are better than others but overall none of them are too bad. I really like Ladybird Roses but I am biased towards this one because I get along well with Cathy (the owner) and find her a lovely person to deal with.
