Id Of This Rose Pleeease

Hi Roseman,

Came across this post and was very excited when I saw the photos of this climbing rose. I have a climbing rose in my garden that I have had trouble identifying. I now believe it may also be "Silver Moon". I will attach some photos of my climbing rose. Please, what do you think?

This rose was originally planted so it could grow up a hexagonal birdcage. We have taken the bird cage away and it's now left growing as you see it here. If I don't keep a check on it, it will grow straight up into the tree it grows under (it's fast growing). The thorns are lethal, smallish, sharp and hook like. If you are walking past it you can get hooked up pretty quickly, if your not careful. The leaves are glossy green and the flowers have 5 petals and always attract a lot of bees. These photos were taken in the month of September. It will only flower once a year.

Frances, unless I am wrong I beleive you have R. laevigata or one of it's cousins.

R. laevigata it is

Yes I am certain it is R Laviegata. I grow one and it has reached the top of a 6m high lopped eucalpyt. It is 6 years old and a glorious sight in spring. The sound of the bees as you approach it is great!
Last week I spoke to a garden club on a property out past Jandowae and behind me was a massive plant of Laviegata that is known to be over 50 years old. It would be about five fence paling sections broad and suckering all over the place. It is in a position where it can do whatever it likes.
Last year I planted R Brunonii and I think I will have to hire a gardener to help me control it!

Bonita18, I guess you did not get any pictures of this magnificant specimen. My other thought on this plant it could be very good wood to retreive for budding or cuttings if someone was inclined.

No I didn't and I doubt if I will go to the property again in a hurry. Three years ago this same garden club asked me to speak so this was a return visit! One friend said I was asked back to please explain why the advice I gave them didn't work and the roses died!!

Laevigata even grows ok down here. Not as evergreen or vigorous as it was when I grew it near Newcastle (NSW) but still has most its leaves. I have two plants from two different sources. Hoping to get it to work in crosses this season... though it is most uncooperative.

Simon do you want some Laevigata wood, I can get as much as you like, the plant is about 20 years old and the wood came from Rustons

Thank you ALL for putting a name to another one of my unknown rose's.
Being a new member of Rosetalk for only a couple of weeks now, I have already had heaps of help with positve ID"S of my unknown's. I greatly appreciate it too. I can now look them up and make sure I'm caring for them right to get the maximum out of my rose's.
