I have been pulling oats out of a bed of Austins or a bed in the making. What I found was a very long cane belonging to GJ. Has anyone had experience with this rose having long canes or if it has wanted to posssibly climb scratch

Yes it does throw out long canes, David. It flowers best when pegged. Can be quite spectacular. Great perfume. Ripper thorns!

Dave that isn't what I wanted to hear. I was someones answer would come something like this, " you must have a sport of GJ and if you do, try propagating it to see and then market it with Mr Austin", I wish.

Dave do you think if I kept the long cane, could it be trained to apost and let climb along a arbour that has yet to be built scratch

my GJ that I was going to give to you but changed my mind (Indian Giver)
has canes about 7 to 8 feet long.
